The Beasties win the whole thing simply based on length of a successful career and remaining original and relevant the whole 25yr+ career. Theyre the only group on the list (outside of maybe Outkast) that could sell out MSG tomorrow. Im not saying they have the lyricism as a Blackstar...but you have to respect their game, influence on fashion and catolog of work. Pauls Boutique is the best hip hip album of all time. Period.

Guys... the Beastie Boys may not be all about lyrics, but they are versatile. They went from rock-rap with Licensed to Ill to sample-crazed, well sequenced, pop culture referencing in Paul's Boutique, to live instruments in Check Your Head/Ill Communication, to a more digitized, electronic sound in Hello Nasty, back to their NYC roots of straight up rap with To the 5 Boroughs, and further into a digitized sound with HSCP2. Also, they stayed relevant for 20+ years. Their music transcended generations. I'm only 18, I wasn't even born till their last few albums came out and I'm a fan. Music is not all about lyrics and shit. It's also about experimentation, not being afraid to go against the norms of the genre and having fun. That's what the Beastie Boys represent to me. They didn't have the cultural impact that the number 1 seeds had, but I think they definitely deserved a number 2 seed.

Beastie Boys are a #3 Seed and Geto Boys are a 2 seed? Come on, man!

  • Brookes - 10 years ago

I didn't use the same criteria for every match up because shuttup and forget you. Both of these groups reminded me of the reactions I had when hearing some of their songs for the first time. That made it incredibly hard. Ante Up? How About Some Hardcore? Cold Az Ice? crazy. DUMB CRAZY. However I was also around for the cultural Impact of Beastie Boys and how dope their baselines were, given the era. Plus Sabotage (ill Communication as a whole), Paul Revere, Hello Nasty, etc . So I went with the Lifetime achievement award because ya momz.

Let's admit it...The Beastie Boys were never that good. It's ok...you can say it too. They are only on this list because we gotta pay "homage" to a "legendary" white rap group. They're horrible...we all know that. We all just need to be honest with ourselves. 3rd Bass would run circles around these guys. Do you really believe that the Beastie Boys as 3 seed are as good as The Roots? I know they are gonna win this match...but it would make my day if they lost. Ante up!

    Where the F is Slaughterhouse?

Beasti boys is the most overrated crews ever...Bunch of Stan fans. I cant name a single song of them I like honestly. They did the right thing in their era but their music doesnt live long. MOP is more legendary, still makes new music today and therir old shit still holds up...(And im white, if that matters)
Off topic: Im missing Onyx on the list, and maybe Gunit, Comptons most wanted, Gangstarr, Pharcyde...can name even more groups & duos.

  • AP - 10 years ago

MOP but no Onyx???? No love for queens though?

You have to listen to License to ill album. Your right Dr. Shabazz it s generational as well as Regional. My all time favorite group is Outkast and it's not even close for me. Every album they have made can be listened to from beginning to end. I can't say that for a lot of groups albums or artist albums period. Content ,Lyrics, originality make Outkast tops in my book.

  • Dr. Shabazz - 10 years ago

This is more of a generational preference in my opinion...I was born in 1984 so I was a pre-teen and teen when MOP was making waves, but not even all that aware of The Beasties except for Hello Nasty, and when i did my research on them I was just like "meh, they're not wack, they got some joints." MOP's music just speaks to me in a different way i guess.

  • GFunk - 10 years ago

People you understand that's THE Beastie Boys. One of the best hip hop albums of all time.

  • Chance - 10 years ago

Beasties a #3???? Put down the pipe!

  • InternationalBubba - 10 years ago

The Beastie Boys got a pass. They would have lost to any other group.

  • AP - 10 years ago

Beasties should have been a 2. And is the only reason MOP is a 6 because Jalen and Jacoby were scared MOP would smack the ish outta them? MOP is not a 6 seed.

  • Alex C - 10 years ago

I was really hoping we could get past the first round without someone pulling the white guilt whines, but noooope.

  • Ant - 10 years ago

As a white guy, I think its offensive that people still feel the need to pretend that the Beastie Boys could ever rap. If you want to talk about the production on their albums then fine... but these guys were always a straight up joke to me. Never once heard them outshine a beat.

  • The SMAC - 10 years ago

M.O.P def should not be a 6 seed, at least 3 or 4th seed in my opinion…and to make matters worse, they open up against BEASTIE…. come on now…great conversation topic though…been wanting a hip hop group discussion for years!

  • Dr. Shabazz - 10 years ago

MOP is the one 6 seed I feel can upset. Too bad they're gonna lose...people go nuts for the Beasties.
