That Blackstar album was fantastic... but they can't beat out EPMD! Erick and Parish were a dirty one-two punch! Fisherman hats and all!
How do you grade this? Based on what was released under the group name or including solo projects from each member? As individuals, Talib and Dante crush Erick and Parrish, but as a group? I LOVE We Are Black Star, but that's all they'r bringing to the table. It's a classic, but EPMD have a double album of hits that runs well over a decade. Not to mention the fisherman hats that were in fashion for a second.
I love this tournament, but wish they could have re-seeded. Then again, there would still be arguments about it...
AKM, I'm not sure what you're talking about. I can only think of two instances off the top of my head where E outshines PMD...'Please Listen to my Demo' and 'Da Joint'. Have you ever heard PMD's solo albums..like The Awakening? I don't know, E might have had a more unique voice...but this is in no way an imbalance on the order of Prodigy & Havoc as you imply.
EPMD got a bad seed in this bracket. I would have them in as a 2 seed. But I'm biased, favorite group of all time!!
I love both of these groups...but let's face it. EPMD was really about Erick Sermon. If Parish was a stronger lyricist...then they would get more credit. BlackStar is winning because Mos and Talib are ridiculous lyrically. Erick can barely keep up with these guys and Parish is like a dead weight around his neck...lol. That 1 album from BlackStar can stand up to pretty much anybody in this bracket. Especially hacks like Bone Thugs or 3-6 or Beastie Boys (yes I hate all of those groups). EPMD deserves credit for longevity and relevance for sure and I wouldn't change their seeding. However, they aren't better than BlackStar. Deep down you know it too...lol.

Strictly Business, Unfinished Business, Business as Usual, Business Never Personal and the list goes on... ! If you have never listened to the groups don't vote!
Why ya'll hatin on blackstar? Their album(s) are way too dope. I think they shoulda been a higher seed...with that said epmd do have some great classics,just not the real spit comin from talib and mos definite

Black Star is no more a group than Kanye & Jay or Meth and Red. Sorry, they aren't better than EPMD and they don't belong in this.

I love Black Star as a group, but they only had one album together. EPMD is a Hall Of Fame Hip Hop group. There is no way they should lose this round. Hip Hop fans, get it together.

I love BlackStar, but this is the worst seeding result of this tourney.
EPMD has albums, has hits, has longevity... Talib and Mos are HOF worthy, but their 1 album was a more of a compilation than an album.

This is the disgrace. EPMD got robbed in seeding first of all, they are a 3 seed at worst.
Second, if Black Starr is a group then so is watch the throne. The album was titled "kweli and Mos def present black starr". And it's 1 album!!! I love that album, but EPMD has multiple albums, and I would put Erick Sermans impact on Hiphop up against anyone (rapping, producing, putting others on, etc). This is a shame.
This was by far the hardest one to vote for I'm a die-hard Eric & Paris making $$$$ fan but Blackstar is Shaq & Kobe a Dynamic duo

I don't even consider Black Star to be a group. That was a 'project'...a great project, but that's it. And even if they were a group, they wouldn't be in the same league as EPMD. Matter of fact, their best work, Fortified Live 12", isn't even 'Black Star'...it's Reflection Eternal featuring Mos Def.
There is no way that Black Star's one album (as much as I love their work) can compare to decades of work and hit albums that EPMD has released. EPMD is just a much better GROUP than BlackStar was. This is a case where people are following commercial appeal.
NOT CLOSE! jalen I see you! EPMD got classic after classic! I love me some Black Star but come on. That was more a one-off collab than a real group-group. EPMD set the standard for hardcore.
I got an enormous amount of love and respect for EPMD and what they did and contributed to hip-hop, especially in those golden years, but I reach for that Black Star album waaay more often than I reach for anything of their's. Its almost criminal and immoral that these two had to go up against each other! Gotta check out Mos and Talib's non-album material they've done too...you will be pleasantly surprised.
Seems like a case of recency bias to me. EPMD criminally underrated nowadays. But I guess that's just business as usual in the rap game.
I love Mos and Talib but they only made one album. Red and Meth did two but got left out? EPMD put out many lp's and classics. This is criminal.
EPMD held their own, IMO,during the greatest time of hip hop. I sound like the old hip hop guy.
Gotta Mos Def and Talib Kweli. I made sure to tweet at Jalen and Jacoby to make sure they added them onto this list. Two amazing rappers. Absolutely no disrespect to EPMD but I really enjoy the classics Mos and Talib put together.
Black Star had one classic album. EPMD had two, AT LEAST.
I got love for EPMD and any other time they would win but not against these two...no sir.
