If the opera house wasn't built on the site of the old tram shed what pride would we have in our city. Without art our space that we inhabit would be as interesting as parramatta rd in peak hour. When we build a city it needs to reflect hope and charm so that we can have somewhere to hang out in when the relos come and visit.
A progressive leader has given the city back to us where we can feel like we can walk around it with interest and imagination and not look at grey buildings and suits

It's time to make a change I think two terms max and glover should step down as Lord Mayor and have fresh blood voted by the people as she has made a few decisions which we the taxpayers are paying for eg the bike lanes and now this $9million expenditure that if we want to impress the world eliminate the vast amount iof poor homeless people by building accommodation shelters that the world be in awe.... Art for arts sake can take a backseat till we resolved other issues .

M Ward your comments are confusing infrastructure with public art displays. Those who wish to support the likes of Clover Moore need to have a reality check as she is only interested in pursuing her own self interests which are not for the benefit of the majority. Due to Sydney being a major place of business I feel that her position should be more accountable to the business and employment needs in the area rather then tasteless public art and bicycle paths.

Obvious point would be about the homeless, but have they checked with Bunnings they beat any price by 10%.

Clover more is very good at spending our money on her little brainless projects. Put the money to better use. You're a goose.

Both Johns above have summed it up beautifully. We have a long record of opposition to the new. There was strident opposition to the Harbour Bridge, AWA Tower, the AMP building, Harbour Tunnel, Eastern Distributer, the New Conservatorium of Sydney, Renzo Pianos Macquarie st building, Sydney Opera House, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour....the list goes on. The protest invariably cites money better spent on the poor. The design was selected by a panel of eminent art professionals including Elizabeth McGregor director of the MCA, it was an international competition drawing approx 600 Australian and international submissions. The winning submission is by a renound Japanese architect/ artist and is a bold and daring design, perhaps we should hold judgement until it's complete. Just sayin'.

Clover has wasted more than enough public money of her crazy schemes such as cycle lanes in already too narrow and crowded roads. The headline referred to this latest scrap metal posing as art as 'Eiffel' but OFFAL would be far more appropriate for this latest hair brained offering. As for the blue milk crate ........ what is the woman thinking?

I think we have better and more pressing matters to deal with in Sydney that the $9million could go towards....who the hell are the 25% of people that think this is a good use of our taxes?!?

It's not about being a waste of money but the fact that these sculptures are just such bad taste. Public art is an important part of any great city, I am just so mortified that these works have been selected. Seriously?

Fantastic she can find $9 million do the right thing and build accomadtions for the homeless . Humanitarian I'm sure she sees homeless people in Sydney sleeping on the streets. Put the money in good use !!

No matter what Clover does, she will always have her haters. Many have voted on these pieces of art and I think down the track we will either love, or hate the works for what they are, art! Give the lady a break, for she loves this city as much as any other true Sydneysider.

Creativity which is visionary will always be challenging, whether in the fields of music, literature, visual arts, architecture or sculpture, and it is only by pushing the boundaries in these fields of artistic endeavour that new and innovative works are created for our enjoyment.
Where economic rationalism influences public debate it will always be possible to criticise the spending of public money on public art, but if we go down that path then creativity will be stifled and very few new ideas will survive, leading eventually to a culturally poorer society. The young artists who have created these works will, no doubt, be able to successfully point back to the purchase of Jackson Pollock's "Blue Poles" for the NGA's collection as being an economically sound investment. It also was controversial at the time.
New public art is rather thin on the ground in Sydney, and Cr Moore is to be commended for taking this initiative. Fresh ideas often generate spirited debate, but that debate is one that we need to have. It would be sad if the process is tainted by bitterness and triumphalism.

Money would be better spent healing the sick, feeding the hungry, helping the poor. providing a better education for all children, and improving our natural environment.
How can spending so much money on "art works" be justified when we have so many other pressing needs in the community and society at large.
