Are you in favour of the provincial government's $40 per day offer to parents with young children to help cover child care and tutoring costs?

Each parent should get 100 per day so we can put our child in the private school....

I feel that a parent should have to submit a receipt of payment for day care, programs or tutoring that they have there child in during the strike. This receipt will show that they actually were out of pocket during the strike. There will be many parents who take advantage of this money when they don't have there kids involved in anything.

What a bunch of shameless teachers and a contemptible union. They are unworthy to work with our next generation.

This is absolutely crazy that a government would come up with such a scheme. Naturally there are many parents out there that would be happy to take this money. For most teachers, salary is not the main issue. It is class size and composition. There are few parents out there that would approve of the conditions that they have to send their children into every day. Teachers are going crazy dealing with classes that are too big to manage and students with special needs that are not getting the extra help they require. Christy Clark needs to try teaching in such classrooms for a week and her tune would soon change.

Teachers know what the pay scale is for teachers before they enroll in their education program at university. If you want to earn a doctor's salary, go to school to be a doctor instead. If you want to earn a nurse's salary, study to be a nurse. Don't go into education, and then whine and cry about your salary as a teacher. My father and my wife are both educators, and chose this profession because they care about children and want to have positive impacts in their lives and prepare them for the future. If they wanted more lucrative monetary incomes, they were free to pursue other higher-paying careers. Teachers are fortunate in that they have relative job security, which means stability of income. During an economic downturn, they continue to have a job and receive a consistent paycheque. Other types of workers may have higher incomes than teachers when times are good and the economy is strong, but when the economy declines, they lose part or all of their income because that is what happens during economic downtimes. My brother used to make six figures, and did so for years. When the economy took a plunge, his company stopped receiving contracts and he eventually found himself out of a job. Teachers should be grateful for what they have. The government is correct in standing firm behind a fair and reasonable offer. If teachers receive substantial pay hikes, so will other government workers expect and demand similar raises. Shall we just give every government employee the salary they want, and just increase taxes on businesses and individuals until they shut their doors or move away? Then we will have NO tax base. Shall we just go into debt so we can "afford" to pay teachers what they want (or what they "are worth" or "deserve")? If that's your solution, I'm glad you're not teaching MY children.

Put the money back into the school system and pay the teachers what they deserve. They spend more time with our kids than most working parents are able to and we pay the damn taxes so our kids can get a good education, we also support social services where alot of people stay home get high all day and spend my money, what the hell is that if our kids get limited education they may end up doing drugs and living off the system. Give them a good education so they can have a brighter future. If I had a choice where my HARD EARNED MONEY goes it would be to the teachers!

BCTF should put more efforts in education instead of money. If BCTF really cares about kids, they should accept the deal, it's not bad. Not every hard working person get increase each year. The economic is not good, we need to work together as a whole society.

For a government who claims to be broke and constantly cutting into desperately needed public programs to be offering to cough uml lion a day? And then voting yes to a raise for themselves? I may not be a math genius but I know that doesn't add up! Just do the right thing and follow the courts decisions, get back to the bargaining table and get our childrens' futures back to the forefront and back on track!!

  • Canadad - 10 years ago

This is so wrong!! If the government can afford to give us $40 per day when the public schools are closed why don't they just let us keep the $40 all the time so we can afford to enrol our kids in private schools. I paid those taxes in the first place...shouldn't I be able to choose to get decent education for my kids with my tax dollars??

Sorry, Government, your comment doesn't jibe with the facts. The main sticking point here is that the Liberals refuse to increase funding to a point where programs can be provided that meet the needs of all students. And provide librarians. Oh, and comply with two rulings of the BC SUPREME COURT! Having taken three years of zeros, teachers deserve a fair wage increase, but if the Liberals actually followed the law, I'm sure the teachers would go back to work pretty damn quick. If you think that's greed, I understand why you call yourself "Government".

Take away all the stops -get this settled before the start of school . Give this money to the teachers and make the size of classrooms reasonable. This is a weak government that cannot negotiate effectively to stop these type of strikes! The children will suffer from this ridiculous action!

  • WOW - 10 years ago

GIVE THE MONEY TO THE TEACHERS AND END THIS STRIKE ALREADY!! TEACHERS ARE AT AN EQUIVALENT level as DOCTORS AND NURSES! THEY ARE MANDATORY AND SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF SO THAT OUR CHILDREN GET THE BEST GUIDANCE AND EDUCATION IN THEIR EARLY YEARS SO THEY GROW UP TO BEING A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTOR TO SOCIETY. THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE - OUR TEACHERS SHOULD BE VALUED AND GIVEN INCENTIVES TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THEIR BEST GUIDANCE AND GIVE FULL ATTENTIION TO OUR CHILDREN. IT IS BEYOND ME HOW ONE THINKS THAT THE TEACHERS ARE BEING SELFISH?? Here's an idea: HOW ABOUT COMPENSATING ALL THOSE AMAZING TEACHERS THAT HAVE MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES?..AND THOSE WHO DON'T CARE AS MUCH WELL LET THOSE TEACHERS PROVE THEMSELVES WORTH OF A RAISE. There is a solution to every problem if we put our ego aside and deal with matters in a more compassionate way.

This is ridiculous , that money should be given to the teachers as they are as part of society as everyone else. I know teachers that have to get a part time job just to sustain their financial needs. Many teachers work more than they need to to ensure the future of every young child big and small to become useful in society no matter the cost. but if they cant support themselves then how can they support others?
An odd question as to parents that has a child and are TEACHERS them self, will the government give them the money? I'm asking this because the Gov't neglected teachers to attend their own son or daughter graduation ceremony, as to show that the Gov't does not like the teachers at all.

  • Government - 10 years ago

It's not bullshit because if the teachers are really there to just teach the kids then THEY should not be greedy about how much they're getting paid. If you're working just for the money then don't teach, go find another job, if not then quit complaining.

  • Declan - 10 years ago

I think the money should just go the teachers I'm 14 myself and this BULLSHIT!!!!

  • Jennifer - 10 years ago

Unbelievable. Is the government really so stupid to believe that we will go got this, like they are doing us a favour. Exactly as others put it, why is this money not going towards the resources the teachers ( and parents like myself) are asking for? How is it they cannot come to an agreement with teachers and will argue over dollars but then put this on the table? This is outrageous and insulting. Give the teachers what they want and get our kids in school.

  • MamaMia - 10 years ago

Appalling that our gov't thinks parents are as short-sighted and greedy as the BC LIberals. Put that money towards an agreement with teachers, and get our kids and teachers back to school. That is the ONLY thing that matters. $40/day for parents is disgusting and insulting.

  • MamaJen - 10 years ago

if it costs the same for them to be in school I'd rather they be in school.

  • Mother of 3 - 10 years ago

Kids are suffering from the strike. They're being deprive of their right to education!

  • Mother of three - 10 years ago

How about they just pay the teachers and give them the funding they need instead. Just a thought because most parents wont be able to find 40$ a day daycare or be able to pay it and then maybe get reimbursed. Get our kids BACK to SCHOOL!!!

  • Fuzzyfur - 10 years ago

This is a disgusting tactic by the Government to 'win' over parents. It's insulting. I want my kid in SCHOOL. I want them to take that $40 pr child per day (it works out to about $14,000 per day for my child's school) and put it into smaller classes and more support for students. The rough estimate is that this will cost the Government between $24-$30 MILLION each day in this Province. Funny how they have the money for this, but no money to improve Public Education.
