Did the crow maybe peck at the bear just a bit? The crow was dropped so quickly as to suggest 'something' happened but it's too difficult to tell.

Most definitely a change in dinner plans. The bear was swacking away at the water and only once the bird was in its mouth did it realise that this bird was not actually edible... though had it been a vegetation eating duck, tasty tasty tender, dat bird WOULD have been dinner. Nobody wants to eat crow, yuk.
