Day after Labor Day, limited breaks, 180+ days of school, longer days. End late May-early June.
This coincides with the Summer Tourism schedule, and is the law in many Eastern states.
I have no problem with longer school years, but these long breaks around the holidays are too long; and this schedule supports economic growth in our more tourism (aka rural) areas that depend on the late August traffic.

Start the day after Labor Day and end the 1st week of June (6-10). I did all my BVSD life from kindergarten through 12th grade. We had 180 days of school. This is about 2 weeks more than now. It's no wonder why learning the basics is gone and now they teach-to-the-test for the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR. A real shame in my opinion and I am sorry for the kids lack of an education.

August and early September in Colorado are usually hot and dry while May tends to be cool and rainy so starting in the middle of August and ending in mid to late May makes little sense weather wise. I have heard it said that one of the reasons schools now start so early is that administrators believe it will give the teachers more time to prepare for the standardized tests that are given in March and April. I have also heard it is because they want to wrap first semester up before the "winter break" (Christmas) though with the current calendar second semester is still much longer than first. Neither seem like that good of reasons.

Students should be trained to exist in the real world. They should be attending school 40 hours a week 52 weeks per year with 2 weeks of vacation per year. That is plenty of time off for a growing child.

We do live on an Agrarian calendar any longer, so the old Summers off does not fly any longer.
