I love PTA, and my head says Inherent Vice will end up being a better film, but my heart completely votes for Interstellar. Everything from the cast to the ambiguous trailer has my anticipations rising through the roof. Knowing how epic and thrilling every Nolan film has been for me, makes me head-over-heels excited for this film. Sorry PTA, but I gotta pick Nolan on this one.

I think the last poll question I've seen that was this obvious occurred around November 3rd, 1936. I'm going PTA all the way. The simple fact is that Anderson's worst film (Hard Eight) is still better than Nolan's best film (The Dark Knight). The only thing that will even motivate me to see Interstellar is the cast. Particularly Jessica Chastain, who is easily my favorite actresses working today ("I love those redheads, man!")

  • Jason Eaken, from Los Angeles - 10 years ago

Well, I chose Nolan's "Interstellar," which shocks even myself, since I think Adam and I may have to duke it out for who loves PT Anderson more (though I do have a tattoo from "Magnolia" on my arm, so there Adam)!

And what's more is I wasn't as high as most on Nolan's previous original idea "Inception." But for whatever reason, I think "Interstellar" may be one of Nolan's best films, and I think "Inherent Vice" will be possibly a little less brilliant than "The Master," which itself is slightly less operatically brilliant than "There Will Be Blood," which itself ranks 3rd on my PT list behind "Magnolia" and "Boogie Nights."

But back to Nolan. My excitement has everything to do with casting Matthew McConaughey. Just from the trailer, you can tell he's bringing an strong emotional sense to the film, which can be lacking in Nolan's movies. Anne Hathaway I can sort of take or leave, but you've also got Jessica Chastain in there, who for my money, is approaching the level of Cate Blanchett. Can't wait to see how all of it fits together.

But who knows. I could be completely wrong.

I barely know anything about either one of these movies, but P.T. Anderson is my favorite working film maker, so this is an easy question for me. I appreciate how the Dark Knight trilogy was kind of a game changer for comic book movies, but I think Inception is a little overrated, and I never got the hype behind it.
A new P.T. Anderson movie feels like an event, and is always an experience to dive into and get lost in. He is able to tap into facets of the human condition unlike any other film maker. Inherent Vice has been my most anticipated film of the year by a mile.

  • James - 10 years ago

I am really looking forward to both films but Anderson is a more consistent and individual film maker. Besides, if you look at it in terms of "what have you done for me lately" one made a masterpiece and the other made an overlong narratively incoherent mess. PTA all the way.

This is a really tough question. I have been and always will be a huge fan of sci-fi movies (even the kind that may not be that great, but I can always find something entertaining about them). But if I think about the actual impact that these two directors have had on me, which films I tend to think about, ponder on, PTA comes out on top. My first instict would be to go see Intersteller, but I have to acknowledge that films like The Master, There will be Blood and even Punch Drunk Love have just been more meaningful to me.

Evil poll, really ... But I couldn't resist the opportunity to vote against Nolan haters who believe all movies should be either (a) art films or (b) Avengers-ish popcorn, with absolutely no room for anything in between, and are just positively angry that Nolan is so successful

  • Jeff - 10 years ago

Sorry, but this isn't even a choice for me--Inherent Vice all the way, and I'm legit surprised the results are as close as they are. I don't want to live in a world where people are more excited about new Christopher Nolan than new PT Anderson.

  • Erin Teachman (Washington, DC) - 10 years ago

As much as I love Paul Thomas Anderson and as wonderful as his films have been in the last few years, I have to vote for Interstellar. If this were purely about directors, PTA would win in a cake walk, but there is something else at stake here for me. I grew up with the stories of Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein careening around my young skull. I wandered around colonies in space and on other planets right along with them. I want space travel to be part of the future of humanity and I think that starts with dreaming about it on the big screen, as much and as often as possible. I could not be more excited for Interstellar.

This deathmatch is a classic battle between head and heart - In my head, i know that it shouldn't feel disappointing to see a PTA movie, but with little familiarity of the adopted source and coming off his two back to back masterpieces, it's hard to let go of the nagging suspicion of the chance of regression.

In my head, I know I should apply this same argument to Nolan and Interstellar, but in my heart, I expect a sort of comeback after what I felt was a bit of a letdown in The Dark Knight Rises (which may not have been the exact story he expected to tell considering the untimely passing of Heath Ledger.) If for no other than reason than the potential big screen spectacle, Interstellar takes my vote.

    PTA is dope.

  • Kris - 10 years ago

Pynchon + Anderson? No contest. Inherent Vice all the way.

  • Austin from EHT New Jersey - 10 years ago

This is my first time writing in so be gentle. PTA, in my opinion, is probably one of the greatest directors alive today. His movies shows a mastery of all aspects that go into filmmaking. He is able to quickly and totally immerse his viewers in the movie and take them along on a wild and fascinating ride. The same can be said of Nolan. But Nolan is my favorite director. He has inspired me to go to college to study film and perhaps go into that field of work one day. So I am at a crossroad, my favorite director or the best director. The truth is that I would pick Nolan. I love his stories, his settings, the psychological and sometimes physical violence that his characters often deal with. Simply put, I'm going with my heart on this one.

If this were a director death match between PTA and Nolan this would be no contest. As much as I love Nolan's work, (particularly Memento, The Dark Knight, and The Prestige) his big budget work is often bloated and unfocused, while PTA is a brilliant filmmaker who's worst work still leaves me deeply moved. That said I will have to go with Interstellar, not so much for Nolan but for my love of the science-fiction genre. I really feel like the genre is in one of the worst places it's ever been. Where once effects and cheesy stories were used to get at larger themes of human nature, now the effects have taken over and the results are dull, dull, dull. One of the reasons I hate the new Star Trek films so much in not just that they are vapid, uninteresting, chracterless, pastiches of cliches and cultural pandering but because for all their terrible clunkiness the original Star Trek films were about something more than the boring tropes of revenge, loyalty, honor, and murder. Yet the new Trek films continue to be far and away the most critically and commercially praised of the series and it makes me think the future of sci-fi is just that, slick polished aesthetic bliss with literally nothing underneath. So I want Interstellar to succeed because I want big budget sci-fi films that challenge. I want effects that dazzle and don't nauseate. I don't think Interstellar will be "this generation's 2001" but I do think it will be a lot better than what we've seen so far. Though I have to admit, Thomas Pynchon and PTA is a match made in Heaven.

No offense be to Christopher Nolan, who proves to be a wonderfully inventive filmmaker, but there is nothing quite like the release of a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie. Anderson's catalog is one phenomenal film after another. Each movie is rich and affecting. Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk, There Will Be Blood, The Master... Each could have a term class devoted to it, and Magnolia is perhaps my favorite film of all time. For my money (and thankfully this poll isn't legally binding so I can pay to see both), Inherent Vice is the film to beat this year.

  • Art from Maumee, Ohio - 10 years ago

The only thing that saved Inherent Vice is that it doesn't have, as my friends call him, Matthew McConalrightalrightalright. They were dead even up until that revelation.

  • Jordan Wellin in Boston - 10 years ago

How is this even a contest? Have Nolan fanboys suddenly infiltrated the site? Nolan's films continue to get bogged down in overwrought and nonsensical narratives with faux-intellectual undercurrents, while PTA is easily the most interesting and reliable filmmaker of the last two decades. It's a no-brainer.

  • Josh from Farmington, CT - 10 years ago

This might be your easiest Death Match yet. Nolan's last two films (Inception and The Dark Knight Rises) were awful. PTA's last two films (There Will Be Blood and The Master) were phenomenal. When Nolan goes back to a small-scale, formally inventive project like Memento, I'll be interested. Interstellar looks like another bloated, soulless Nolan blockbuster, so I'll pass.

  • Chris - 10 years ago

I don't think Nolan has made a truly great film since Memento or The Following and I'm not sure if I can trust him since Inception turned into Ice Station Zebra so Im going with PT Anderson who never lets you down.

  • Brad - 10 years ago

I love PTA. That being said, Interstellar is my choice. It will be this generation's 2001.

  • Henrik - 10 years ago

Tough call. Nolan fires up my intellect and is visually stunning, but PTA fires on all cylinders. I think about There Will Be Blood and Magnolia long after the movies are over. They live with me.

  • Edward Savoy - 10 years ago

While I respect PTA as a filmmaker, I don't have quite the love for him that many do. His films, primarily his most recent ones, work primarily as character studies and, while that's interesting, I like to see a bit more. While this film seems to be a return to a slightly breezier form for PTA, Nolan just has a better track record for me, The Dark Knight Rises notwithstanding. Here's hoping for (groan worthy pun) an out of this world experience this fall.

  • Gary Brown - 10 years ago

My Head & my heart say PTA - Magnolia is in my top one films of all time and The Master is one of my recent favourites. It's a no brainer - until my Inception, Memento, Prestige and Dark Knight blu rays come to life like the books in The Pagemaster and scream at me - "Really? REALLY? - do you cast us aside so easily??". It's a fair point and it makes things awkward. I vote Inherentstellar.
