Picking between these two is like picking which one of my kids I love the best. Both are in my top 3 groups of all time (Little Brother #3)..Going with Outkast only because I saw them in concert last month.

  • Dee - 10 years ago

I'm 39 and Tribe has the biggest emotional hold on me because they realized a genre that didn't fully exist in hip hop until Bonita Applebaum dropped, not to mention without Tribe Outkast wouldn't exist since (they first rhymed over a Tribe instrumental) they fit within that Native Tongues space. It's harder to vote for Outkast too since we're the exact same age and somehow that feels weird but I was in college in the south when Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik dropped and I can honestly say, after living in every section of the country that no album had such a lasting and immediate effect like I saw this did when it changed the entire south. If you couple the fact that Outkast has been more musically productive and they are still in the public consciousness to this day PLUS Andre 3000 being the most consistently brilliant emcee of all time (find two verses he's dropped that are weak) and the vote, painfully, goes to Outkast who is the greatest group of all time.

OutKast, was the first rap group to ever be Grammy nominated for Album of The Year in 2002, with Stankonia.

Then in 2004, OutKast became the only rap group to ever win the Grammy Album of The Year award with Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Album_of_the_Year

They also got a nominations, in 2007, for two songs on their final album, Idlewild, and in 2008 for "International Players Anthem (I Choose You)", with UGK.

    Studio albums:
    Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)
    ATLiens (1996)
    Aquemini (1998)
    Stankonia (2000)
    Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003)
    Idlewild (2006)

If people want to have a conversation about the hip hop platonic ideal go ahead and the value of mainstream tastes go right ahead. I am down with that conversation and think a case can be made for ATCQ, a group that made it this far in the bracket for damn good reason. However, if you're going to claim ATCQ is bettery by disqualifying outkast's double album and claiming Andre 3000 and Big Boi only have 3 well-known songs I will call you a clown and go back to speaking with people who are from the same planet as I am, the one where Rosa Parks, Jazzy Belle, ATliens, Player's Ball, and Elevators all comfortably charted on platinum albums.

Im just happy that Jalen and Jacoby did the bracket at all. Its all good. Im 36 I grew up understanding the music and culture from 86-1998 - that was the peak IMO. Im also from Jamaiaca Queens. So I am biased. I love Run, LL, Tribe. Period - because they did units and had a huge impact on the culture. I respect alot of outside opinons because even though hip hop is relatively new outsiders of our culture say that Tribe has some of the greatest music . That speaks alot- Outkast is dope - its just different when I all I knew was Kane, Ra the Gawd, Jay Z from 96, Esco, Poppa, LL, Chuck D - This pod made me listen to their albums and its fantastic. I also completely disagree with Jacoby on the golden age- when your new Mc's quote stuff from 20 years ago thats the Golden age. Rappers look now like run and Ricky D looked in 88. Period. The fact that tribe and oukast even did units at that time based on their musical approach is amazing. The same way a dude that looked like Christopher Wallace did 10Mill and it was pure genuis casue no matter what he could spit and make a song. Thats what I miss the most about the music. When guys made great Music and it didnt have to make a rhyme ending in the N word.

I love Tribe. I grew up listening to Tribe. I'm 26, so I had to go back and listen to old Tribe albums as a teenager, and they made me fall in love with this art form called Hip-Hop. If this were a vote of who is my favorite, ATCQ would win hands down.
But i'm voting for who I think has the best collection of music, and I have to admit that Outkast brought something that was never been done before and will never be duplicated. ATLiens, Aquemini, and especially Stankonia are possibly the most lyrical and creative hip hop albums ever created.

The Ummah was a music production collective, composed of members Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, and the late Jay Dee (now known as J Dilla) of the Detroit-based group Slum Village. Occasional members included Raphael Saadiq, and D'Angelo.

    4chan trolling?

1990: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
    1991: The Low End Theory
    1993: Midnight Marauders
    1996: Beats, Rhymes and Life
    1998: The Love Movement

    vs

    Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)
    ATLiens (1996)
    Aquemini (1998)
    Stankonia (2000)

    Simple! 5 beats 4 duh!

  • Inwhysee - 10 years ago

Tribe had a better career than Outkast. Too many youngin don't remember Electric Relaxation

  • AKM - 10 years ago

I love Outkast...but I'm really surprised that they are ahead by this much. I thought Tribe would win this fairly easily. So either the voters are too young or they just don't know about Tribe. Tribe is not getting enough credit musically either. The kind of music they brought was groundbreaking too. Outkast is very unique and they hit big commercially. They make amazing music without a doubt. Tribe has my vote though. When I think hiphop...Tribe comes to my mind before Outkast does.

  • Matt Gold - 10 years ago

@Nick - Man. You gotta check out ATLiens and Aquemini - both albums can be listened to non-stop - no filler... Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was also great (but could use some polish)... but ATLiens was simply life changing.

  • jacoby_ - 10 years ago

Outkast the new #1 seed yall!!

  • Zach B - 10 years ago

Outkast with a K! Dungeon Fam! Goodie Mob! Aquimini!

  • Nick - 10 years ago

my opinion, for what it's worth, as a guy growing up in rural Australia, A Tribe Called Quest were far more influential. Outkast had a couple of good songs, but a far bit of filler on their albums. If you exclude the dual solo albums that was Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, they've got maybe 3 songs that anyone knows, Ms Jackson, B.O.B, and So Fresh, So Clean (and really, they're just pop songs, not really rap songs) And Idlewild was such a good album, i didn't even know it existed until i looked up Outkast's discography on wikipedia just now. Then look at ATCQ - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, Beats, Rhymes and Life, bam, 4 awesome albums from start to finish

  • Stahv - 10 years ago

I've never really been much of a fan of hip hop or rap to be completely honest, but lately I've been Obsest with Tribe, everything about their sound just flows so smooth. Thank you Jalen and Jacoby, Award Tour hooked me immediately.

  • I AM Hip HOP! - 10 years ago

I would have to give this one to Tribe, being that they are apart of the founding fathers who created that lane in hiphop where abstract was acceptable. Andre 3000 is Qtip in the furure to the 10th power as well as Big boi and phife dog being the complimenting sidekicks!! But Qtips production enhance hip hop, where Andre 3000 excelled performance wise and artistically! I love both groups but I would have to go with Tribe because ithey brought unity to hip hop joining forces with Jungle bros... (Native Tongue) I just think Outkast, who I would prefer to see live in a concert performance just capitalized off of the abstract flow in hiphop!

  • Da Business - 10 years ago

W/ all due respect to the Tribe, who btw has the greatest group name in hip hop history. Outkast is overall the better group. As a matter of fact, props to Run Dmc but, 'Kast is the greatest rap duo of all time. Bottom line is Outkast has left a lasting impression on music culture period, more so than the Tribe, I'm talking all genres. Tribe are legends and icons who has accomplish a lot and deserves the love. Outkast tho, has been to Pluto and back w/ this rap ish. Again, no disrespect to Tip but, 3stax will rhyme circles around him. Google it if u need to, Dre has way more quotable rhymes, I guarantee it. @ the end of the day tho, the Wu can't be stopped. I'm good w/ Outkast being #2.

  • Supervillain_T - 10 years ago

@Max hit it right on the money; and I think his international point of view--not being bombarded by American radio--gives a nice perspective. 3rd coast ("southern," for you Europeans) rap is the worst. Granted, Outkast is an example of rare quality rap from the south (still trailing Goodie Mob by a mile), but that's the same as saying Kenny Rodgers isn't bad for a country musician. 3rd coast rap is to hip-hop as country music is to rock: they are second-rate, trashy imitations of quality art forms. Good East coast rap stands out for its hypnotic beats and poetic vocal cadences, good West coast rap stands out for its balls-out demonstrative vocals and memorable melodies (both instrumental and vocal). Then there is the ugly, inbred, backwoods cousin: 3rd coast. I understand that it is the most popular rap music of the last decade (Lil Wayne, et al), but that is why the genre has gone to shit and we are forced to live through nostalgia, discussing a bygone golden age (which is exactly why this bracket exists). I remember precisely in my lifetime when I realized that rap was dying: right when I was graduating highschool and Cash Money was taking over the radio and selling millions of records. It's sad. But at least we can listen to The Chronic and Ready To Die over and over for the rest of our lives without the jams ever getting old.
By the way, I am a proud Houston kid. So nobody can say that I am just biased against the south in general. I just hate and completely disagree with the Sarah Palin-esque conceit that redneck culture represents the "real America;" and although black rappers can't technically have red necks, 3rd coast rap exists to serve a sub-sect that same dumb demographic.

  • AP - 10 years ago

You can't go wrong here, and I actually like Tribe better. But Outkast is the greatest group of all-time. Longevity, impact, hits, lyrics, originality. And I'm seeing Outkast in 3 weeks live in Centennial Park.

  • max - 10 years ago

it's pretty obvious outkast will win, but i'm going with ATCQ. I'm actually from Italy, and i know a lot of people who know about the tribe, nwa and wu tang of course, but i've never ever heard about outkast. Like, really, never. obviously they must be super popular in the US though. I tried listening to them, but i guess southern hip hop is just not for me. Or maybe i just don't get it. Been a hip hop fan for a couple of years (before that, i've been a punk rock fan my entire life), still studying the genre, heard most of the hip hop giants and i still continue to search for little and big gems out there. ATCQ conquered me since i first heard "excursions". I'm a big fan of jazz and blues, and tribe's vibe is just .. like, perfect for me. I enjoy them immensely

  • rappity rap - 10 years ago

Outkast is easily better than Tribe.

    More classic albums.
    Better live performers.
    Longer careers.
    Better lyricists.

Outkast is the greatest group of all-time.

  • a - 10 years ago

u guys missed racionais mc's from brazil

  • jayooenee - 10 years ago

and yes, in my opinion, i can say that DE LA SOUL is better than tribe

pos and dove rap circles around q-tip and phife..always have and always will.lyric for lyric---there's no debate

production wise, however, its not soweezee :
prince paul (for the first 3 albums) and all 3 of de la's members produce vs q-tip handling tribe's music

of course, ATCQ's music is held in higher regard by a majority of people --due to its more direct approach --(funny enough,Jive initially thought that LowEndTheory was too polished and commercial sounding) but still doesn't take away from De La Soul's indelible innovations and contributions to rap music and hiphop culture.

  • Supervillain_T - 10 years ago

    @Jayooenne
Great comment (aside from the personal attacks). But who are you voting for? I would hope that someone with your amount of musical knowledge recognizes that Tribe is by far the better group.

  • jayooenee - 10 years ago

    @the abstract

yikes! with all due respect....you should clarify your terminology before posting...

first you list your grandfather's favorite JAZZ (LOL!!!) artists like the aforementioned
"the temptations, otis redding, ben e king etc"... fyi, they're soul/R&B artists...jazz cats related to Tribe's music would be folks like Weldon Irvine, Ronnie Foster, Ron Carter, Grover Washington, Milt Jackson to name a few,

and ATCQ bringing the "funk" better than anyone in rap ? i can definitely understand a statement like that
when it comes to actual JAZZ but not FUNK --whether in the James Brown post-Cold Sweat manner as heard in the early Marley Marl, Paul C,CedGee, BombSquad etc..productions OR in the later incarnations i.e. Parliament,Cameo,Zapp,Slave etc as exemplified by the X-Clan,EPMD, NWA/Dr.Dre, Above The Law and a majority of the West Coast etc...OR the Electro funk of the 80s that came from New York,LA, and DETROIT. ATCQ DID utilize elements of funk records but NOT MORE or BETTER than the previously mentioned artists.

btw/ of course i understand the lineage from which hip hop and rap music comes from. i wouldn't comment if i didn't know otherwise. i truly wouldn't want my ignorance to be exposed as blatantly as you exemplified.

  • The Abstract - 10 years ago

    @Jayooenee
Do you know what hip hop derives from? When hip hop first started they replicated many styles used in jazz music. Hip hop didn't just appear into the world from thin air. Jazz is a precursor to hip hop you idiot. Yes, Tribe brung the funk to hip hop more than any group. Name a group that did it better. You can't, simple as that. I like De La Sou, but you can't say that they were better at it than Tribe. Stop kidding yourself.

  • jayooenee - 10 years ago

"no other group brought the funk to hiphop?" this statement is ridiculous!
again, how old are you? do some research youngblood!

they brought rap back to its roots? really? and other groups in the golden & silver ages didn't? and by back to its roots, you mean disco breaks& MCs rapping about their DJs?

  • jayooenee - 10 years ago

    @The Abstract

"jazz music like the temptations, otis redding, ben e king etc" i think you meant ' soul/r&b'. how old are you??? LOL

  • The Abstract - 10 years ago

I'm def gonna go with Tribe. They're the only Hip Hop group IMO who have 2 of the top 10 albums of all time. Low End Theory might just be the best album put out by a hip hop group. The only other album touching in is 36 Chambers. No other hip hop group brought the funk to hip hop. My grandpa who loved Jazz music like the Temptations, Otis Redding, Ben E King,ECT. He loved Tribe because of the flow that they had. They brought hip hop back to its roots. I know the Outkast will win on radio success alone. I like Andre 3K, but I think that Tip is a better overall MC. It's sad to see them go, but than you ATCQ, you are my child hood, and in my eyes are the greatest group EVER in any genre.
