A Junior at a Division I university knows exactly what he was doing and why he did it.
You are a fool if you believe this was ignorance.

All of the people who "can't understand" why this is not acceptable should keep that opinion to themselves.
The Trail of Tears has no business being tied to football. Ever.
Non Natives need to stay out of our issues with their pointless opinions and comments.
The Natives who aren't offended probably know nothing about their culture, language, & heritage other then the simple fact that they are "Native" or "Indian" or what they have "read" in books.
Saying you are something means nothing if you don't live it.

My great great grandmother walked the trail of tears and I am not offended in the least. I know my history and know what took place. People are way too sensitive any more.

  • June - 10 years ago

They should be made to read and study what actually took place. Too many do not know the Native American history, are oblivious to it, and in some cases some don't care.

I don't think anyone meant to offend anybody. The media is just trying to create a story and if is left alone it will become a thing in the past. OSU students should just disregard it in future signs.

I think the sign was inappropriate; however i do not think the students had intentions to disrespect the people involved in the tragedy that happened. I think the problem lies in lack of education at all levels.

An O state fan just posted a picture of dead bodies to my family member saying " look its your grandmother" and then " did i cross the line oh well lol" Really what kind of person posts comments and pictures like that Oh the same who makes jokes about genocide

Granny-you said they meant they would be crying on their trail home. You need to learn history-the Trail of Tears was not about the indigenous people going back to their home. They were being forced to move from their homes! Over 4000 indigenous people died. Hence, the forced removal being called The Trail of Tears!!! This also happens to be the 175th anniversary of The Trail of Tears!Too many people do not know real history. I do not know your heritage but I do know mine and am proud to be an indigenous citizen of this country!

As much as I hate osu and would love to bash them for this, I won't. I kinda agree here with granny. It's a bad play on a sad part of history. I understand what they're meaning by it. Get
Yall some cheese to go with that whine.

My late husbands Grandmother was a full blood cherokee that survived the trail of tears. I do think this was inappropriate, however, I think they did not mean any harm. I also do not believe that many of todays students or young people for that matter, have been taught about the proper history of that part of Americas History. Living in Oklahoma one would think it would still be part of the teaching.

  • carli - 10 years ago

Uhhhh...Granny? Not what they meant. It was a direct reference to a historical event that killed thousands of natives and left them homeless. Yes, they're in Oklahoma. For that they should know better.

  • Reta little - 10 years ago

Genocide is offensive dont you think?
My great grandfather arrived in okla a orphan his tears for his mother and father are part of that trail

  • LouLou - 10 years ago

Get OVER IT. What the hell is wrong with all the racism. Indians, Blacks, whites, Chinese or whatever. Again Get over it, it's GAME DAY just have FUN AND WIN!!!

  • Reta little - 10 years ago

The Seminole Tribe WAS part if the forced removal and resulting genocide called The Trail of Tears and the students using this reference knew what they were referring to it was ment for the Florida State Seminoles It was a classless act by a group of students wanting to be on tv

  • Amber - 10 years ago

I do not understand what is so offensive about this banner. First off Oklahoma was a huge part of the trail of tears. And second all the students are trying to state in my opinion is "Send them home crying". I do not see the offensiveness to that.

  • Gregory - 10 years ago

@Granny if you can't see or understand how insensitive this is then you're part of the problem.

  • Nokomis - 10 years ago

Ignorance is not an excuse!! I am Native American and I am not offended by every insensitive anti-Native American thing I read, but this crosses the line. If you don't know why it is insensitive perhaps you need a history lesson!

  • granny - 10 years ago

They meant you're going to be crying
On your trail home .... it's getting just stupid every one is offended by everything that's said .. but can break morals and No one cares !! Leave the kids alone !!!

  • granny - 10 years ago
