Its a good decision by d govt.... I appreciate it as a Indian.. Hamare desh me kuch aise log he jisko sirf har bat pe buraai hi nazar aate he.. Agar modi sir uss logo ko heaven me v rakh deta he, tab v heaven ka buraai nikal kar bolega ''uff heaven pe itna aram, yaha kisi ka koyi dukh hi nahi he, ese kaise hoga...!'' so dnt listen to those bakwaas people...they only try to criticise, khud to kuch v kar hi nahi sakta upar se halla karta he

it amazes me that lefties and jehadi appeasers are so angry at india's culture of guru parampara.
but have no problem in glorifying all the invaders and attributing all the good thing of india to foreigners, such a shame that they are still being elected.
need to throw these anti indians asap.

Give these paid servants (teachers) some credit. Elevate them to the level of selfless Guru. They try to instill some values in our children. Parents have no time to teach basic etiquettes like how to speak, how to sit , how to work and get along with others in addition to teaching skills for earning livelihood. These phony regionalist are narrow minded, self centered politicians who are bent upon breaking the unity of the nation.

WE need a detail study how when locals are allowed to convert to enemy culture like ,communism, leftist, islam and christian how and how much they hurt the nation ,local areas and themselves and world.

People objecting to the change of word 'Teacher" to Guru, are probably ignorant of the fact that the word 'Guru'was adopted by English Language several years ago. Therefore, one can see this word appearing in any English dictionary. It is silly that they must object to replacement of one English word with another for naming this festival

It's the meaning that is really important and not so much what it represents letter by letter. Let it be Teachers Day or Guru Divas, you all are still writing in English Alphabets not even using Devnagri or Hindi so as to simplify.
Their is no such harm, but yes people who also likes to read (know) more and more about our own Indus civilisation and history in the past, which is really beautiful should go with the Guru Utsav term. Guru is already an English word, later on Utsav will add up to.
As far as people who likes consistency and feels no need to bring new change, should think a little bit more.

And still if you are confused with my vote, I opted YES, I welcome the move. But HRD is saying it's just an essay competition for students. Well "Politicians".

I don't think renaming 'Teacher's day' as 'Guru Utsav' has nothing to do with politics, in Indian culture we consider a teacher as Guru and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was one of pioneers of oriental philosophy and to bring it before the rest of the world. So, in my view this name change should cause no problem as long as the essence of observance remains same or better. It's unfortunate that people are doing politics over it and this is condemnable. Even after 200 years of slavery, we are still hesitant to put forward our own culture and heritage before the colonial residue just because of some narrow minded people!

@lily what's backward about guru utsav?

  • lily - 10 years ago

teachers day is a term that is easily connectable for all indians as well as nris studying in indian schools abroad. No need to get backward about a term as long as the day is celebrated in the right spirit. There are more imp issues to be looked into rather than trying to change names. Silly!

Its a very good initiative to name the teachers day in the native language

  • lolit dutta - 10 years ago

If i do say in motherty language it sounds more real.

  • Nitin Mittal - 10 years ago

GuruUtsav sounds more Indian-ised. Celebrating Teachers days as Guru Utsav will connect more teachers and student as it gives it more local indian and festive touch so people can connect to it easily.
Opposition parties are looking for some issue to cry foul and hide their proven incompetence in past. How many times Mr Manmohan Singh has connected or even tried to connect to students in such way. Few words of motivation and appreciation from PM can fill students with positive energy to excel in the fields of their interests.

  • Bharati - 10 years ago

It's a beautiful expression. And renaming it to 'Guru Utsav' has made the day more festive, pure and Indian. Else Valentines day, friendship day, teachers day... All seem the same :)

Parents and children should organize and let the schools know that they wish to participate in these activities. I can see the minority run schools objecting to this. Remind them that the children in these narrow minded schools belong to the broad minded society. When they unilaterally shut down all minority run schools all over the country a few years ago, was it in the best interest of the students or was it politically motivated by the administrators?
PM Modi wishes to share his vision with the school children. For once, we have a PM that shares our values.

  • Bharat Shiksha - 10 years ago

We support the move which is forward looking, fresh in idea, innovative, inspirational and will indeed be productive. There is nothing wrong in calling it Guru Utsav aligning with India culture to pay respect to Gurus.

  • sukram meena - 10 years ago

yes we have to celebrats teachers day as GURU UTSAV . it is sutaible in our Indian culture as like others festivals

  • CVP - 10 years ago

Political parties not respecting schools and teachers now. They are only tracers of students from teaching from education to agitation. Will they stop it from Teachers day to respect Shri Sarvappali Radhakrishnan.
No political parties celebrating Teachers day as all are uneducated in political science.

  • CVP - 10 years ago

Teachers must take undertaking that teaching of lessons only their motto to educate students and eradicate doubts now prevailed in teaching. All teachers must respect this for development of future India 2020.

  • KISHOR - 10 years ago

Opposing everything just because you have to oppose shows the desperation of the Congress and DMk. Politicising such a holy issue is totally uncalled for . Such behaviour is absurd to the core. I am totally at loss of words to describe the stupidity of these ppl

  • Brijesh shah - 10 years ago

This is a very good thing done by our pm to interact wth childrens. Congress is just opposing it fr no reason. They r opposing as they r jealous that this innovative idea was done by modi n nt another nakli gandhi
