Do you think Facebook should delete the Profiles of drag performers?

I am a example of FB going overboard. I am a single disabled heterosexual grandmother of 3 and don't have a stage name of any kind. Never even been on one except in elementary school. But FB DELETED MY ACCOUNT on Monday, without warning or a chance of reprieve or a way to contact them. I have never posted anything inappropriate or suspicious on my page. I rarely even post about politics and religion. Mostly always about my 3 Babyloves. I didn't understand what they were talking about about wanting what name I wanted to identify with and FB to display, so I put Dream believe Do as the same name I have used on social media and email since 1998. I only have my phone as internet and didn't understand what they wanted or why they would need my driver's license and Birth certificate. I don't have a scanner or a computer. And I'm not willing to just send those type of documents to some random customer service Rep. I worked customer service for 20 years. I know what gets done with your "private" information. I have seen it happen. So I was looking for a way to contact them and there wasn't one. So I attempted to send them a picture of a post with my granddaughter and my name in it but they immediately deleted the account. I lost 8 years of business and personal contacts, family that I had just gotten back in touch with after 30 years. Pictures of my grandchildren growing up and their birth that I CANNOT get back by any other way. I was devastated. I live in alone and 16 hrs from any family and don't go out of my house much, so Facebook was my only way to communicate with other friends and family. I do not even own television, so I get my news leads there too. It's not as easy as setting up a new account when you have lost so much because of someone deciding your name or documents aren't real. I set up Dreambelievedo on FB in 2006 to communicate with my daughters who joined the Marines and Air Force. It was a way to motivate myself after a abusive relationship and to help me be positive about being alone. If you dream it, believe in it, and go do it! Is my mantra. I have actually tried over the years to change to my birth certificate name but FB every single time said they did not believe that my true name sounded like a real name and would convert it back to Dream believe do. I finally gave up about a year ago because I had set up businesses a year earlier with DBD as the name and all my friends called me Dream or DBD. But then on August 3rd, 2015 without an email or a post to my account of a warning, they deleted it! I am heartbroken and the account I started to adjust to being alone, has now made me isolated even more than I ever have been before.

Okay so i think if they are going to do this it should be enforced to everyone. Im bisexual but I didn't post that on to my FB account and my last name isn't real either but since i don't outwardly show that in bi they haven't targeted me. Now lesbihonest here is not for "safety" reasons because really, putting all your business in FB isn't safe at all and I've been hacked now twice in the past from places i never thought people would think about me but it's happened. Its not safe to put your real anything on fb. That includes your name your age your feelings your religion or beliefs on there or anything else. People are very dangerous out in this world and its bad enough we have to deal with it inthe real world why can't we protect ourselves out in the internet? I was always told to never put any real info on the internet in the first place when the internet first came out so if fb does that and makes people change their names that should mandatory for everyone who has a fake name because mostly everyone does and FB as we know it would come to an end just like MySpace has lost so many people. So for those who say it's a good thing sure it's good until someone stalks you from some thing you posted on fb and finds out your location. Its BS and they know it. They will lose so many people and so much money.

This is really pathetic. Who cares if they use their stage names. It ain't hurting nobody. & frankly if the guy who made facebook doesn't enforce having their real name on there, then let it be! Dang people! Can you find something else better to do than pick on gay, transgender, etc. It's called a 'life' you should get one!

  • Kaylee Fransen - 10 years ago

This is so stupid. Why should only members of the LGBT community get deleted? In my opinion anyone who is under a different name than their real name should be deleted. Now when it comes to drag queens their stage name is what they have decided to have as there real name. Yes, it may not be the name their parents gave them but what is the different between a drag stage name and a man named William being called bill?

  • kim reprogle - 10 years ago

Banning that but keeping a video of someone setting a kitten on fire????? Your morals are totally f#@ked up

  • mel - 10 years ago

See, the thing is that literally no one else has had their accounts targeted, except for people in the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender and nonbinary people who feel comfortable using their preferred name. Facebooks policy of "you have to use your legal name" is so centered around heterosexual and cisgender people. And when a transgender or nonbinary person can't use their preferred name that could possibly even trigger gender dysphoria in a way. This whole thing is discriminating against the LGBTQ+ and as someone who is nonbinary and doesn't use my actual legal name on Facebook, it pisses me off that just because I'm not cisgender and don't feel comfortable using my actual name I need to have my Facebook suspended. So all in all, fuck you, Facebook

  • Shante - 10 years ago

Think this is a great idea. I think everyone should represent themselves truthfully for safety reasons.

  • Tom - 10 years ago

It's their site.. They get to create their own rules. Don't like that? Don't use the site.

  • Brian - 10 years ago

Time to delete FB and go back to something else. I know of several people that have deleted it in the past week. Guess I will be another one that will.

  • Vance wilson - 10 years ago

I understand the protection part, but as mention by others here, it is their stage name and how they are know, no one would know who they are otherwise, and for some that is for thier protection. Some people use the name they are know for, john Wayne would never use his real name, he was john Wayne and his real legal name was Marion Morrison, he has a page and they not making it change. If it is their business, then they should use that page.
Anyway, what would be wrong with an AKA line added, just a thought.

This seems like such a targeted attack to a particular group based on personal bias. There are millions of users attempting to protect their identities using middle names or nick names and none of them have been forced to change them. Every human being has a right to express themselves.

It seems that Facebook has a staff made up of bigots. Why dont you hit them where it counts? Change to a social media site that accepts everyone. Call it we're all equal .com or something. They tried to friend me (the staff members) a couple times until I told them that I make costumes for drag queens and trans girls. I also told them my mother is a lesbian. Now I get half my posts deleted and most of my newsfeed and messages never get to me.

  • Trisha (yes, Trisha) - 10 years ago

This is an outrageous matter of discrimination and nothing more. Facebook is a social media sight holding no legal identity ramifications whatsoever. Even my bank, insurance company, fellow employees, everyone that I have dealings with recognize me as Trisha even though my legal name, at present, still reflects my male birth name. The fact that they're addressing the LGBT community and not members of the general public, that may well be using aliases, should be grounds for a class action discrimination lawsuit. And quite frankly I sincerely hope that occurs.

  • Kitten France - 10 years ago

This is so rediculious face book should be ashamed I mean really if my profile name should match my drivers license tthani guess my profile should be deleted since I CANT use my local name because there system says that is not allowed my legal name is Kitten France but according to Facebook is inappropriate so I therfore go by another name so will they be fixing this issue but truly this is about money and they should all be ashamed of themselves

  • Chastity Parsons - 10 years ago

This is absurd....it has been proven over and over again in hate crimes, that people that are perceived as "different" need to be able to protect themselves, so that they may live a life without fear for themselves or their families. They have every right to a normal life just like anyone else born in the USA. As for facebook's policies....they are seriously flawed. Child sexual abuse is a serious issue everywhere, I reported a woman who endorsed a site promoting underage kids having sex, they also said THAT did not break any rules, so they would not make her remove it.... But from what I know, sex with children IS AGAINST THE LAW!! I support gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, whatever people feel they are as long as it is not harming anyone. Children are not mature enough to make decisions about having sex, when things like that are endorsed, it presents opportunity for pedophiles to find each other, network their filth, and target people that have children on their pages.....If they don't tighten down and specify EVERY aspect of their rules, they have no right to single one group out, just because it isn't "normal" to them. Because let's face it, that is what this is about. Having a stage name for your profile shouldn't matter. When you set the account up with your real information you can't hide behind a screen name. The information behind the scenes is what you use to track down the offenders and abusers, not the picked name they use for all their friends and family to use to find them and friend them. Get it together Facebook....or your going to crash and burn like myspace did. You blocked me for 3 days for defending my children against someone that used your site to verbally abuse my family and children, but did nothing to the woman who made the initial attack. And here, again, you want to try and punish innocent people, that are trying to protect themselves by making it more difficult for the closed minded offenders to find them.....seriously? You should create more jobs and have actual people research the reports for misuse of the site instead of sending keywords through a computer, then calling no offense for the "decision". I would like to end this by apologizing to all the "different" people that are being affected by this fiasco....one among many "politically correct" bs issues that this world is dealing with in this day and time.

Having drag queens use their legal name is going a little over board. They are stage names, that is how they are known. Facebook thinks they are stepping up their points by making everyone use their legal name, well they are wrong. By using their real names, Facebook is opening a whole can of works. I have a friend who stalks her on Facebook and they did nothing. Cops couldn't even do anything because it wasn't violating any of Facebook's policies. She finally changed the name on the account and changed profile pictures. And blocked that stalker. If Facebook continues on this path, I think they are going to lose so many people on this social app.

  • Shari - 10 years ago

There are more than transgender people that do not have their right names on fb. This is getting ridiculous. Should be able to use name you want. There's even under age children on here that aren't 18. If you are closing down all accounts let us know so we can get out pics off of here. Getting too technical for me :/.

  • Lacey - 10 years ago

I reported a comment the other day on a (used to be) Facebook friend's status update where she said, and I quote, "Let's assassinate him" talking about the President. A few hours later, I received a message from Facebook stating that they reviewed my report and decided it didn't violate their terms and policies. A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine posted a picture of her son riding his bike naked in the house (you literally couldn't see any of his privates) and somebody reported it - Facebook shut her page down. Completely. Another friend had multiple pictures of herself reported for nudity because you could see cleavage - Facebook removed her photos. My ex boyfriend and his girlfriend have both created page after page after to stalk and harass me, I reported it and nothing was done. I know for a fact that his gf has at least 6 fb profiles under different names. Get your shit together, Facebook!

  • Daisy - 10 years ago

I think that it shouldn't just be targeted to drag queens but other Facebook users as well using faults names. I can understand why Facebook is doing this for the protection of people in using a real legal name maybe for police law-enforcement it would be easier for them to look up in target people.

  • Tina W. - 10 years ago

I know several non LGBT people (who aren't drag queens) whose profile names don't match that of their driver's license or credit card. Are their accounts "unsafe"? Will their profiles be deleted because they're not accurately identifying themselves? This decision isn't about the act of miarepresentation, its about bigotry- not controling an action, but the thought/ideas behind the action. Shame on you, facebook.

  • Brandice Williams - 10 years ago

There are tons of people on Facebook that don't have their legal names on their profiles. For what reason should the drag queens change their profiles when this same rule isn't being applied to ALL Facebook users? If this was a rule meant for everyone (regular 9-5 workers, college students, high school students, celebrities, etc.) then it would be understandable and fair. It isn't meant for everyone which makes it extremely unfair and also discrimination. I think Facebook needs to get it together.

  • Tommy Merlino - 10 years ago

See guys let's stop supporting Facebook we can make a change if everyone stops being sheeple I want my own name back I wanna use so I'm not open to prey

  • Taylor - 10 years ago

I think this all ties in with policy that has been structured through facebook by the government. Facebook is compiling a distinct legal database for the Federal Government. Just like the issue with the messenger app. How it can invade your privacy so drastically...... This is probably some ploy to throw off the facebook users and distract them while facebook will be adding something to profiles where you have to use your legal name but can also put down alias's like a "rap sheet".

  • sara kaufman - 10 years ago

This is a ridiculous attack aimed directly at the LGBT community! I have dozens of friends who do not use their full real names and ones who use mainly nicknames. Why isn't fb going after these people? This makes me sick that in this day and age something so innocent creates such a controversy. I feel that we need to fight back in in order to show support for the LGBT community. Absolutely disgusted!

  • L RICHARDS - 10 years ago

so will they also delete the names of actors , musicians, etc ,who dont use their real birthnames

  • tracy - 10 years ago

facebook deleted my profile and i used my name from birth not fake but i got deleted it took me several months to get it back i sent them my id over and over again and they took forever to even respond to any of my messages so i agree this is bull

  • Jean Dineen - 10 years ago

I'll give a short reason why accounts should not be deleted. Simply put, it's not nice. These are performers who take their craft very seriously. Their drag is a reflection of their sexuality, their lifestyle, their job, their representation to the world. So deleting their name is just not nice. Isn't that enough?

  • Michael R Ranson - 10 years ago

i really don't feel it's necessary because the dragqueens on face book all there friends know what there real name is so it don't really make a difference

  • robert - 10 years ago

Okay people they did this to the people that had farm names as their names they gave ya a choice to either change it to a like page or they would delete it So 100's of people lots their pages So bottom line it has nothing to do with the LGBT they are doing it to everyone

  • Angel Ortiz - 10 years ago

Honestly this is discrimination if you want to start deleting transgenders because they use stage names then you should start erasing famous people as well because not all famous people use their real name they use their Stage Name.!

  • sye - 10 years ago

Here's what I have to say, (get READY because it is gonna be a big one)
when facebook was first created and founded it was intended to reconnect with old friends, family, co workers, so on, that you have not seen in forever or just to keep in touch with over the years.
However, ever since facebook became the 'new myspace' so to speak it has gotten really controversial over the years from moms posing in photographs with kids, to cyber bullying being okay(If it does not directly tag someone apparently...) to, now, drag queens are not ALLOWED to have a FACEBOOK?!
I am sorry but to the company of FACEBOOK here is my message to YOU!

You want to take this thing way too far!
that's fine but if drag queens cannot do that, than why is everyone else allowed to??
and why is it that there are so many 'joint facebook's' like for ex.
adam and eve' or 'mario & peach' or 'luigi N daisy' anything like that..
there are STILL FACEBOOKS like that but if anyone would try that NOW you would NOT BE ABLE TO DO IT (apparently) so why JUST TARGET THE DRAG QUEENS?!
Because it is a form of SINGLING OUT a GROUP OF PEOPLE..
it is called BULLYING, DISCRIMINATION, etc. and to top it off, NOT ALL DRAG QUEENS ARE GAY so there for it is NOT HOMOPHOBIA(for all you Gay-rights activists and such)
it is bullcrap, there are quite a few individuals whom had tagged, posted, commented, etc. things of and about me that personally affected me, my reputation, etc.
but conveniently it was never removed.. but i retailiate against it and me DEFENDING MYSELF in those SITUATIONS got my posts, comments, etc. removed, why?!
and as for, the whole 'no profanity' thing.. good luck, kids now a days will see and hear worse on the radio, tv, in movies, on the street, so on, so forth.
    and lets not forget MUSIC..
so let me get this straight, facebook wants to delete people with 'stage names' like drag queens..
you know it is EASIER to find a PERFORMER by their STAGE NAME.. and if that is the case, lets DELETE all PERFORMERS using 'STAGE NAMES' who WON'T USE THEIR REAL NAMES...
it is NOT HURTING ANYBODY so why does it matter?!
I mean we got groups, fan pages, etc. that SHOULD NOT BE ON FACEBOOK(EVEN IF IT IS AGE RESTRICTED)
we have WORSE things going on, than FAKE NAMES..
we should have the right to have a freaking SCREEN NAME
since the FAKE NAME thing is such a big deal!
facebook YOU are going WAY TOO DAMN FAR THIS TIME!!
You done SOME GOOD THINGS... but now, YOU ARE RUINING A GOOD TING HERE..

Here's a crazy idea.. how about start MAKING RULES AND STICKING TO THEM AND ACTUALLY FOLLOW AND REINFORCE THEM.. like
    for starters:
1.) NO BULLYING OF ANY KIND
2.) Have a AGE RANGE setting for those UNDER 18!!
(IT AVOIDS PEDOPHILES to VIEW THEIR PAGE AND THEY CANT VIEW ANYONE OVER 18)
as far as names go, as long as it isn't hurting anyone, or anything sexual or anything i mean what is THE HARM?
that would be a GREAT START!
just saying.. and why isn't there a 'SEX ATHEIST' OPTION for the 'interested in' section??
why isn't there a 'sexuality' preferance section, instead of just a 'interested in'?
(I know that the interested in can be used for a sexualitypreference but it truly is not, in my opinion.
sexuality is Gay straight, bisexual, transgender and all the varities that ride with it but that is just me..)

  • Tyler - 10 years ago

That is just pathetic ... It is just excuses bc they hate drag queens or gay ppl bc LGBT Groups help a lot of ppl out with bullying , happiness , and courage... there is a lot of ppl that don't use there real names on facebook and i think it is their choice to do so bc yall don't know their situation in their life style ... if they have to delete I will delete and i agree with Chris, we won't be the only ones !!!!!!!!!

  • Jenn - 10 years ago

So it's okay to have Facebook pages with naked/half naked women or pages that promote bullying but they want to delete drag queens pages?if this is actually true then I will be sure to delete my fb account and I'm sure I won't be the only one!!!

  • Chris - 10 years ago

So all the other people who have "pen names" are exempt somehow?

  • Mason - 10 years ago

Many sites allow for you to sign up under your legal name then create a screen name. That is basically all that needs to be done here. Usuers can choose to show their legal name or just their screen name. This is a very simple fix and does not even need to go this far into debate. I am not sure why facebooks IT or web department didn't even bring that option up.
