I tried to join the IPD (as it then was) many years ago - and was refused as I was then only twenty-nine-and-a- half (and you had to be thirty)! That rule applied, despite the fact that at that time I was in the No. 3 HR job in the second largest local authority in the UK..... I decided then that the IPM might conceivably be largely irrelevant to me - and that view has been reinforced steadily over time. Latterly I was invited to join the then IPD when I was Partner-in-Charge of Coopers & Lybrand's (now PwC) UK HR practice of 300 consulting practitioners. Somehow I never got round to joining the IPD.......... So, coming right up-to-date, as Chairman of Philpott Black, an organisation & HR consultancy with seventeen successful years on the clock, I wish the IPD well and I'm reasonably confident I'll be OK in my longstanding chosen profession without being a member.
