Do you think pit bulls are dangerous dogs?

i see 65% of the voters here would also blame the gun for killing someone not the person pulling the trigger. if any animal is trained to be violent it will be violent, and if animal is abused it will turn on any one who becomes a threat. pit bulls are given a bad rep just like other breeds in the past because of inbreeding and lack of proper care

Pit Bulls are not dangerous. ALL dog breeds have the potential to attack, that's why multiple states are currently working on lifting the Pit Bull bans that were so ignorantly set in place. Statistics say that in reality, 90% of all known dog attacks were NOT by Pit Bulls, but by mixed breed dogs that just happen to look like Pit Bulls. I've been around Pits all my life, I own a Pit Bull, so does my sister, my brother, my parents, my boyfriend, and many other friends and family members, and all of them are some of the best and most loving dogs I've ever known, and they would never hurt anyone. It's when ignorant people take in these dogs and abuse them that they turn into dangerous animals, but that goes for ALL BREEDS. Its not fair to blame the dog, let alone an entire breed, when its the people that are responsible for them that should be punished. Don't get me wrong, I know plenty of people who have been attacked by dogs, including my sister and my boyfriend. None of those dogs have been Pit Bulls. One was a chocolate lab, one was a rottweiler, one was a miniature pincher, one was a Pomeranian, and one was some kind of terrier. Most of these attacks were bites to the face, that were completely unprovoked, three of them were to children. So once again, ANY DOG CAN ATTACK, NOT JUST A PIT BULL. It sickens me to see so many ignorant people posting about something they are so uneducated in. Do a little bit of research before you open your mouths and talk about what you've heard or read online, instead of knowing any pit bulls personally. One last thing, I LIVE IN CORINNA WITH MY PIT BULL, AND HE HAS NEVER SO MUCH AS ATTACKED A SQUIRREL.

I've had 2 incidences with pit bulls attacking in my short lifetime. One when i was a kid it was a completely unprovoked attack as I was in my back yard playing and the dog dug under the fenced enclosure that was JUST BUILT for it. and got the back of my leg. And the second I was walking my Border Collie puppy who was on a leash, while we were at a hotel, and a pit bull came from out of a room and started to attack him. My border collie is the absolute biggest baby and lays on his back when a chihuahua barks and always has, and this pit bull ran straight toward him and attacked my dog. To attempt to get the dog to release his grip I was punching, kicking, and stomping on the dogs feet. It went on long enough that I was literally seconds away from shooting the pit bull after repeatedly warning the owner to get the dog off or I would shoot it and with her pleading to me to not shoot it. The dog let go minutes into the attack and seconds away before i shot. I feel guilty to this day about the incident because I took MY LEASHED DOG for a walk and I didnt shoot the other dog to relieve my dog from the pain and suffering of being attacked. Call me mean, insensitive, and or cruel if you would like. the lady paid for all of the bills for fear that she would lose her "baby". But the police did absolutely nothing because she called her dog some kind of spaniel or something. He never even looked at her dog. Her dog wasn't taken for observation etc either. It was a completely unprovoked attack and she claimed that if the dog was aggressive toward humans that it wouldve attacked me. I would have rather it attacked me that my innocent little puppy that had no chance against a 60 lb pit. Her "baby" almost killed my "baby" and the officer tried to tell me that i wouldn't have had the right to shoot the dog in the first place. What were my options to defend myself and my "property" at that point. I've also been around a lot of good pitbulls too. but i will never trust one. and i do think that we should have more strict laws for the owners of pit bulls. Pit bulls are not an inanimate object such as a gun. they are breathing weapons. leashed or not, there should be penalties to any dog attack. if you do not think you can keep your dog under control in any situation, then you should not have that dog.

Pit bulls are absolutely a dangerous breed.

You can't out-love or out-train genetics. Hounds have hunting instincts because that's what they were bred for. Collies have herding instincts because that's what they were bred for. Pit bulls have fighting/attacking instincts because that's what they were bred for. They were NEVER "nanny dogs".

They kill and maim more than any other dog combined. Sure, any dog can bite. Most dogs let go; pit bulls don't. What other type of dog requires a special tool just to break its grip? Oh yeah, NONE.

Chihuahuas can be aggressive. But has anyone ever seen/heard of a chihuahua rip someone's arm/face/torso open? Ever heard of a pack of labs hunting down a toddler? Nope. And with many of they maulings you hear about, it wasn't some abused or stray dog. It was a family pet, raised "with love and care" from puppyhood. Most attacks are unprovoked.

It's not some conspiracy with media covering it up, because the media is just as pit-crazy as most owners.

Owners love to use the "well ban cars then" analogy, so I'll also say this. If there was one specific brand of car that was causing 80% of accidents, it would be recalled. One type of dog (no matter how many different names you make up for it) responsible 80% of dog attacks... hmmm.

I don't really think pit bulls should be flat-out BANNED, but there need to be some stricter laws in place, harsher punishment for offenders AND their owners when these things happen, and people need to stop spreading lies that these dogs are suitable family pets.

Wow. So many deluded people. How about finding out the real facts about these evil monster dogs. Its like the saying "You're untitled to your own opinion NOT your own facts".

  • mary - 9 years ago

if you raise them to be fun loving dog then they will be .. had 2 one was so friendly someone took her and the other died of old age ..

  • April - 9 years ago

A pit bull is only dangerous if the owner teaches them to be so. Have one friend who owns a pit bull and he is just the biggest lovable dog ever. I would own one if I had the space and time to give them. They have been given a bad name because of all the attacks we hear about but any other dog could have this tagged to them as well if we heard more about them. Treat them with respect and they will do so to you.

As many people have pointed out already, it is not the breed but the owner that makes any dog (or any animal for that matter) dangerous. I have a pitbull mix and she is an absolute love. This dog couldn't be any more gentle or kind. We brought a kitten into the house and she was so gentle with the kitten that we couldn't believe it. If anything, she's afraid of the cat! To those thinking they should get a dog...make sure you are capable of spending the time and money necessary to train the dog properly (and it just might be you who needs training) or don't get one. It's unfair to everyone (especially the animal) for an irresponsible person to get an animal of any kind.

  • shel - 9 years ago

Pit bulls aren't dangerous, it's the irresponsible people who own them!!!!!!!! It's owners like these that give pit bulls a bad name. No, I don't own a pit bull or any dog at this point but I know many people who own them and they are just as loving and obedient and sweet as any other dog because of the way they were raised and taken care of and loved. Any dog can be a dangerous dog under the right circumstances and it's a shame when these dogs have to suffer the consequences of their owner's actions and neglect.

One VERY IRRESPONSIBLE pitbull owner always makes the rest of the pitbull owners look bad. It is ALL
about the "owner" and "how the animals are raised." Those dogs running loose is VERY irresponsible, but yet it went on for years? I've had a few different dog breeds and all my dogs have been raised the same. Smart, trained, excellent listeners and they mind. All dogs should be watched if outside, either way. If this problem has been ongoing for "years" then all involved should be accountable INCLUDING the town officials in this matter, they KEPT/LET this situation ongoing for some reason? If this person needed help in containing them maybe the town people, officials and neighbors could have come together to help with fencing if needed. I am a dog lover and feel bad for both sides. You are either a dog lover or not, I love ALL breeds and any breed could attack especially if there is more than one of them........ My pittie and I went on a walk and got followed by 2 large poodles roaming around a neighbors yard loose and came right into the road and wanted my pittie.... THEY CAME AFTER HIM, so there you go. They didn't attack, the owner called them and they eventually went back home. Had they jumped "MY" Pittie. I am sure I would have been the "bad owner" just for walking my dog on a public way.
Just because of the breed, because "poodles" are "good" dogs????? Go figure............

Pit bulls are not dangerous dogs. The people that make them dangerous are dangerous.

  • Lisa - 9 years ago

I believe that any dog has the potential to be dangerous...It all Depends on how they are raised..I believe that there are many wounderful pitbulls out their that are great family dogs...But the only time you hear about them is when something BAD has happened..

Pit bulls are no more dangerous than any other dog. I have worked with dogs professionally for over 40 years and absolutely can swear that it's the owner, not the dog. Unfortunately this breed seems to attract a higher percentage of irresponsible owners than a lot of other breeds. Additionally, if you allow ANY group of dogs to run at large in a pack you will have trouble - it's not just this breed.

  • Connor - 9 years ago

There not that dangues it's they you do things with it

  • Doug - 9 years ago

It's in the pit bulls bread to be a fighting dog, but they can be gentle dogs if raised right. They have to be watched a little bit more, and kept under control. Not allowed to run loose.

  • Maria - 9 years ago

While these breeds "could be" dangerous, I believe the responsibility lies with the owner and how they raise them. I know people that have them and they are wonderful dogs.

  • Carlos - 9 years ago

This is clearly evidence of neglectful owners. I have 2 pitbulls that get harassed by other dogs on our street and they are trained to come and sit when other people/dogs walk by the house. It's sad when this type of animal abuse happens and pack mentality is allowed to manifest.

  • Rich MacDonald - 9 years ago

Pitbulls are a breed of dog that needs to be owned by responsible dog owners. Due to their linage they need to have proper training to keep them from becoming dangerous to other animals and people. I have been around Pitbulls that where raised right and their the most docile ,loving and happy dogs, while at other times have seen some of the most dangerous Pitbulls due to lack of training on the owners part.

  • teresa - 9 years ago

like any dog,it depends how they are raised. pitbull get a bad rap all because of the owners!
