I (halfway) take it back: The (original) Evil Dead is a hugely entertaining, and sometimes genuinely scary movie. But it's more of a comedy, less of a trauma-inducing melodrama like The Exorcist. ;-)

No demon exorcism movie I've ever seen holds a candle to The Exorcist.
That said, the BBC series Apparitions is great fun! If you haven't seen it and you like exorcism stuff, do yourself a favor and check it out. :-)

Dario Argento's "Demons" -- great 80's Italian horror flick about a bunch of people trapped in a theater with demons. Gruesome, gory, superb!

The Exorcist, by far. Couldn't sleep for days. This movie really scared the S*** out of me. Then the Deleted version came out. it was even freakier. Sorry to say the sequels were bad.
