It was announced Monday that GlobalFoundries will take over IBM's chip business, including the Vermont plant in Essex Junction. This is:
The best-case scenario. GF has money and wants to invest. The Vermont plant is profitable, unlike the rest of the division, and IBM just wanted out at all costs.
Maybe the best-case scenario. We'll have to wait and see if they do invest in the Vermont plant.
Better than being closed-down now, but GF will slowly but surely move the operation elsewhere and in a few years abandon the plant.
Not good. Any business that needs to pay someone $1.5 billion to take it off their hands just isn't a viable operation and things won't end well.
Bad. Vermont is anti-business and no international business will want to, or have to, put up with our public policies/tax structure. Government must change to have any hope.
The worst-case scenario. Those 4,000 jobs in Vermont will be gone sooner rather than later.
Don't know.
