I did the history of the old Castle Royale on a menu for Earl's Pizza in 1981. On the 3rd day of filing through old newspapers on microfilm, I hit the jackpot. On October 26, 1933 The Castle Royale opened their doors and also served liquor 6 months before repeal. They had The Dorsey Bros, Harry James, and Cab Calloway perform there. Also "stepping out" at the new club were John Dillinger, Ma Barker and Al Karpis, Homer Van Meter and many more. There was also another nightclub called The Mystic Caverns owned by Ben Harris. The story is he used to "hire out" men to dig graves, and then hire them to kill the men he dug the graves for. There were rumors of murder, 2 men and a woman shot and killed at the Castle Royale. In 1986, I was living in NY and told this to an owner of a resaurant I frequented. She told me Cab Calloway lives a couple towns over and is in the white pages. I called Cab and his wife. They could not confirm or deny my story because others still lived and that their lives would be in danger if they told.
