The man has a valid point! I believe that a country or group of people should celebrate its victory or commemorate a historical occasion on its own ship or its own space with its own venue of significance. I did not know that the USS Olympia's effect merely represented the replacement of Spanish supremacy with American imperialism! This is not what I learned in my high school history lessons. With no blame intended, certain historical facts such as what Dr. Almerio has stated were either omitted or skewed to favor the powers that be. Nevertheless, if the goal of the Philippine communities of New Jersey and Pennsylvania is to celebrate our June 12, 1898 independence from foreign power with our Philippine flag raising, then we should re-evaluate the correctness of using the USS Olympia as a venue for such an important historical occasion.

Chita Datz, it's an ugly part of history! Why take pride in an event that caused lives. Why glorify our defeat. I'm not in favor of raising our flag at USS Olympia during Philippine Independence Day celebration.

To Rene,
There is no bitterness in expressing my opinion. We as a people have already forgiven the abuses of the occupation of our country by Spain for almost 4 hundred years and cruel 4 years of Japanese occupation and so with 50 years of American beneficial colonization. Although we have forgiven, it is ironic that we should glorify it by raising our flag on the symbol of past imperialism...the SS Olympia.

You live in the USA now....go back to the Philippines if you are still bitter that the US occupied the Philippines.

Yes the SS Olympia is part of our history. Rizal is also a part of our history, but the SS Olympia represents our defeat and occupation by a foreign country. Rizal represents our struggle for independence against a foreign country. Do you prefer to glorify our defeat or our struggle for independence?
Thanks for your comments guys! we need all the voices to be heard. Please share the info to your friends as next year your comments can decide if we will change the venue or not. Maraming salamat!!

Personally, I think yes. We still continue to have our flag-raising at USS Olympia,'coz it's a part of Philippine history.

Bakit kailangan pang iwagayway ang bandilang Pinoy sa gitna ng pagkabayubay sa krus ng pananakop?
