Hey Tim is that why Ben Davis is beating Carmel at this voting thing for Mr. Football because last time I checked your a 1%.

  • Sommer - 9 years ago

Perhaps the comments are similar because you can only speak the truth in so many ways. GO SLICERS!!!

  • Codie - 9 years ago

the facts indy area has how many more players to pick through to make a team compared to laporte a tremendous amount. As a younger adult and being inschool the last time we went to semi state.. Never was our town more brought together and now more than ever. This town has lost many of its children to many terrible events. This is a game changer for many of our towns people and hopefully a story that could change thousands of lives.

  • Angels - 9 years ago

These laporte boys are changing this town. They've given this town something to rally behind, there is so many bad things that have happened here with the loss of a high school student, drugs, lack of support for our businesses, etc. Them winning state is going to be a game changer for laporte. Charles salary stood up for his team with an angel pushing him every yard. All of these kids r terrific athletes no doubt, but what salary is doing for our town and his team and his fallen teammate is beyond amazing.

  • Slicer alum - 9 years ago

I played on the LaPorte team last year. That was hands down the toughest experience of my life. Losing such a great friend was so hard to take. What this team and community has done this year is unbelievable. Jake has been with them every single game. They deserve everything they've gotten. I truly believe Charles Salary is one of the best backs in the country, and THE best back in the state! Goodluck in Indy Slicers I'll be there cheering for ya!

  • Koral Hurley - 9 years ago

Charles deserves this win! Everything the Slicers do is for Jake West. Charles has carried this team with an angel on his shoulder, La Porte Slicers Forever! Salary for Mr.Football!!

To the person that thinks the comments are written by one person, I will share that I am sitting at a desk in Folsom, CA and this is only my 2nd comment. :-)

  • Slicer Pride - 9 years ago

You feel most of these comments are written by the same person, huh? You can't fathom that a community might rally around such a great player and great team? Charles Salary IS Mr. Football!! Go SLICERS!!!

  • Slicers - 9 years ago

CHARLES ALL THE WAY! LAPORTE HAS BEEN THROUGH SOMETHING NOBODY HAS BEEN! AND WATCHING THE TEAM PLAY THIS YEAR IS INCREDIBLE! CHEERING FOR THE TEAM THE LAST 4 YEARS WAS SUCH A BLESSING! AND NOW ITS LAPORTES TURN TO DO SOMETHING BIG AND THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING! GOOD LUCK AT STATE BOYS! PLAY FOR JAKE!

  • Purple Pride - 9 years ago

I feel as if majority of these comments were written by one person, from LP. They seem oddly similar in speech... However you make a good point. These are all incredible players. But I have to go with the west side pride! Kyle is a team player on and off the field! Ben Davis Pride! Go giants!

    Charles Salary for Mr. Football!!!!

  • Objectivity - 9 years ago

I have no dog in this fight. Although I live in Indy, I'm not from here and I have no Indiana high school alliances. That said, I'm most impressed with Charles Salary. If you look at his accomplishments, he is a true standout, his size and style reminiscent of Walter Payton. I'm sure he won't win the title because he's not a QB and he's not from an "esteemed" local program, but maybe that's why he deserves a longer look. He has led a team who has made it this far on heart. The La Porte Slicers are this year's Cinderella story, and Charles Salary is their workhorse.

  • Slicer Alumni - 9 years ago

The only player I have watched play in person is the one from La Porte but after looking at all the highlight clips online there are some truly talented young candidates for the title of Mr. Football.
I wish them all luck and hope that the outcome isn't a popularity contest like this poll but a true evaluation of what each young man did to contribute to the overall team.
With those criteria in mind I believe Charles Salary did more for the Slicers than the others, each candidate has done remarkable things on the gridiron but what Charles Salary did for La Porte is nothing short of miraculous!
Going to Lucas Oil Stadium for the Championship was only a dream after the previous two dismal seasons, but it's real and now you can bring it all home boys, do it for Jake.

  • chris - 9 years ago

Clearly all these candidates are great athletes. They wouldn't be nominated for the Mr. Football award if not. Although every nominee deserves to win, my votes for Mr Charles Salary. Charles gets knocked on size but the kid is blazing fast, cuts on a dime, great vision, catches the ball well & just makes plays. I think his statistics back that up in a 5A division. Good luck to Charles and the slicers at state. Truly an inspirational story.

  • Slicers - 9 years ago

All boys are deserving of the mr. Football title. Personally, I am voting for Charles. After watching him grow from freshman year to senior year, the stats are truly amazing and undeniable. Not to mention, the team went from suffering the loss of their brother Jake and the heartbreak that entails, to turning around and making a run for the state title! The slicers story is unlike any other and not only salary but the team as a whole deserves some recognition!

  • mymainmancharles - 9 years ago

    love ya Charles!

  • slicer - 9 years ago

    Go Charles!
Our team has made it so far this year, Jake would be proud!

  • Slicer_pride - 9 years ago

Charles deserves it. Slicers had one goal and that was to reach Lucas oil stadium as a team even after jake passed he is still helping them fight! Charles is closing in on 3,000 yards this season which is crazy for class 5A. A lot of talent comes from the DAC and La Portes football team has won 3 games in the last 3 years. Hopefully Charles wins and the boys take state. Once a slicer always a slicer

  • Decatur pride - 9 years ago

Come on guys! Take the bad spirit away. Whoever wins, will win. That's all. (The fact that I may be the youngest here is just sad because I may be the most mature.) GO DECATUR!

  • Missy - 9 years ago

As I read these comments it truly breaks my heart to see adults smashing these kids regardless of what the stats say!! These 6 individuals were chosen for a reason and to read such degrading comments from many of you is disturbing.. These young men deserved this nomination no matter if you agree or not.. In my opinion it shouldn't be a voting poll that declares who wins, cuz now it's a popularity contest... Stats don't lie and that's what should be used to name Mr. Football!! But since we are voting.. My votes for LaPorte's Charles Salary.. After reading up on all the nominees and their teams, his story, along with the LaPorte Slicers team is truly inspirational... You have a team that won 1 maybe 2 games last season, watched one of their own collapse and die on the field right before their eyes, to come out this season with a 4-5 record and a chance at a state title (1st time since 1949) is amazing.. Salary has been a true leader for this team and his amazing talent has gotten his team to a chance at a state title!!! So as I conclude this.. I'd like to show my support to the LaPorte Slicers and follow their motto.. "Play for Jake.. Win State!!" Good Luck Boys

Charles Salary should be the only candidate on the list. The numbers he has put up against some great defensive units...has been phenomenal. The broken tackles, the second, third and fourth chances he has single handedly created....second to none. Most indy based folk over look the old duneland conference.....once dubbed the toughest conference in the nation.

Castner and James are the best candidates for mr football.James is an athlete who has a chance at the next level.Castner is a great leader and extremely good pocket passer in which you don't see anymore. Both have lead their teams to state , Carmel with a very easy bracket could almost let their jv play until the state game.Ben Davis hasn't had a walk through , they've had two comeback wins meanwhile beating the defending state champs.Who ever wins this 6a state game could be a factor in deciding who's a better leader.Which could apply in deciding who mr football is. Decatur's Stevens is an average player . He may have size and so many division one offers. But he couldn't maneuver in the pocket in the mic like he does now, and when passing he floats the ball and throws a lot of jump balls . Which wouldn't turn out very well in the mic.You may ask why am I coming to conclusions of what would happen if he played in the mic ?Simply because if he can't play in the mic what makes you think he will be a successful player in college .My choice for mr football is castner. He plays a tough schedule , he's great student , and he's breaking various football records. While leading his team to state if Ben Davis can win state he will have brought the tradition of a Ben Davis being a powerhouse once again.

  • John - 9 years ago

Come on people. This is not about Castner and Stevens. They are two great players with totally different styles. Castner is a pocket passer and Stevens is a duel threat QB. They're both very good at what they do. I know for a fact that these two young men talk often and totally respect one another after becoming friends at football camps. Stevens has the brighter future in college football, but many of you may be working for Castner someday. I hear the kid is a whiz in the classroom and I know that's what he cares about most in finding a college. I just want to congratulate both of them for representing Indiana High School Football with dignity and class! You both along with all the other candidates should be very proud to be nominated for Mr Football. My best to all of you in the future!

  • bd - 9 years ago

frank you a dumb ass. BD blew out cathedral. lol
if you don't know anything then don't talk. cathedral wasn't a match for BD and Decatur wouldn't be a match for bd

  • Ben Davis - 9 years ago

Yeah I'm from Ben Davis but obviously Tommys worked hard for what he hads i'm pretty sure that the comments below are coming from grown ass men who are talking smack decatur doesn't have any corn growning blah blah blah if you can get on here and talk shit to Someone who's not of your age group then you have a problem. Just be respectful the person who win will have won for a reason (to the grow ass dudes below GROW UP GET A LIFE find something better to do with your time.

  • Frank - 9 years ago

These guys (Stevens and Castner) are in two different classes with two completely different teams. It's no wonder Castner has better numbers, he's got better players around him. If Stevens were in his spot he could easily have those same numbers. And also Cathedral shouldn't be in class 5a anyhow so you can't count Stevens out for that loss, because that team could easily give BD or Carmel a run for the money.

  • Decatur - 9 years ago

Stop talking down upon about tommy there's a reason why he's winning. You're just mad because the dude from Ben Davis isn't, but that doesn't give you the right to get on here and bash his name grow up! -Decatur Proud!!!!!!

  • BD - 9 years ago

Decatur people......... I know Tommy is a great person on and of the field. he is great player and any team would love to have him on there team! castner vs stevens? its not a match. Castner is a better player then him. Castner had a way better year then him. he plays better teams and he plays very well agains all of them. Stevens faces 2 great teams the whole year and he loses to both of them. its been like this ever since he started as a QB. he cant handle the tougher team or if its not that the team cant handle tougher teams. BD would smash decatur

  • Corey Beauchamp - 9 years ago

Castner has better numbers in the hardest high school conference in the whole county. He beat Warren when it counted. He beat Center Grove when it counted. He beat Cathedral. Decatur lost. If they win next Friday he will have beat Carmel when it counts. He'll put his self in the same category as James Banks who is the greates high school football player ever. He took a historic program back to glory. He has taken Ben Davis back to state. If they win #11 is your Mr. Football. Numbers don't lie. Who wanna be the best gotta beat the best and the best is in class 6A. He beat two of the best so far and now he's gotta be the best.

  • Mike - 9 years ago

Be careful Scott - you're starting to upset people when talking about how good the MiC is. They hate to hear that even though it is so true and 100 times better than every conference in Indiana. Not even close. I agree with Blue that Tommy would have started at QB at every MIC school except Ben Davis. No way he replaces Castner there. People - this is about this season only for Mr Football. Do you really believe Stevens had a better year than Jones, Castner, Williams or even Neal? No way. Come on. Be realistic.

  • Scott - 9 years ago

Hey Blue. Nice Name. I am not bashing anyone. Only stating facts. Tommy Stevens should not be on this list based on the year he and his team had. There were many QB's around the State that had much better seasons than Stevens. Yes. He is a talent, but a number of kids had much better high school seasons at QB. I get sick of the politics of it all. Who cares if he's going to Penn State? Riley Neal from Yorktown should be on this list instead of Stevens. By the way - Are you the Colts Mascot?

  • decatur - 9 years ago

Everybody must not have been at Decatur cathedral game they didnt kick Decatur's butt cheating by refs and a little pay off that's how they won had to have been there

  • BLUE - 9 years ago

Scott I'm not going to get into a childish arguement with you, but I do think you may have to take your MIC goggles off for a second. You've said multiple times that tommy has weak numbers in a weak schedule. Well to MIC fans every schedule is weak besides the other teams in that conference. With that as the baseline I agree with you. Everyones schedule is weak, hell everyone's teams are weak. Very few teams in any other conference could play against MIC schools. Those teams all have 30-40 above average HS players on their teams. There is no comparison to how good the teams are and the schedules they play. The point being "Tommy Boy" would have started for every team in the MIC if that's where he played his football. QB most likely, but undoubtedly somewhere on the field.

There is no reason to bash kids at all in those poll, everyone of these kids had great seasons. Some play for great teams and wewe're the catalyst, and some played for average teams and were the savior. Don't knock kids it doesn't get you anywhere.

And to all of those who say there is no corn to pick and all the lame jokes... if there is a vote, and our township has a chance to get behind someone. WE WILL WIN.

  • Mike - 9 years ago

I'm going to have to agree with Scott even though I am a die hard Center Grove fan. Tommy Stevens did not have a great year and did not even get out of the Sectional. Castner led his team to unbelievable come backs and leads the State in passing yards. He broke our hearts last week. He's just so calm and so smooth. Wow. Still can't believe we lost that game.:(. Congrats to Castner though because I hear he's a great guy!

  • Scott - 9 years ago

I don't care if Tommy Boy had 100 offers. His performance was very average this season against terrible competition. The fact he played all those positions only shows how weak the talent was at Decatur Central. Be realistic. Cathedral kicked your butts and Tommy looked very average. Jones will win Mr Football and Castner had a much better year than Stevens. Also, Riley Neal at Yorktown had a much better year than Stevens. I know Tommy is your hero, but when there's not much talent in the area - that's understandable. LOL.

  • ryan - 9 years ago

And IU stinks. I'm going back to corn now.

  • ryan - 9 years ago

Hey Scott. This is for Mr Football, so team stats really don't matter. Secondly, Stevens was offered like 18 full ride scholarships to big time D1 schools. Dual threat QB, played both ways, recruited as a safety and QB, and played punter. All the kids are very talented. But I don't think they come close to the player Stevens is, and apparently college scouts feel the same way. I don't know how there is even a debate. America's vote! Lol

  • Scott - 9 years ago

Yeah! Tommy Boy is going to win the poll because Decatur students have no corn to pick this time of year! Hahaha. This is the only thing he will win. He couldn't even deliver a Sectional Championship. He's 31st in passing yards in Indiana. Good luck with that Penn State! He's way overrated! Best thing to ever happen to Indiana.

  • Ben davis - 9 years ago

    Tommy is going to win

  • Tony Wood - 9 years ago

Like every online poll, it will be won by the student body that has the best hackers. This, or any other online poll, has very little to do with the truth or in this case who the truly "best" player in IN is.

That said, you can not deny the impact that Charles Salary and the LaPorte Slicers have had this year on the IN football landscape. A team that went 4-5 in the regular season and 2-16 over the previous 2 years playing for the chance at a State Championship!?! R U kidding me! The fact that Charles has been such a large part of their post season success, on a team that is not even in the discussion of "elite" football programs, tells me that he is something extraordinary. This isn't a program that has proven to be a great system or student body that cranks out contenders year after year, but this team and Charles Salary are something special.

For his contributions to put LaPorte in the same discussion with other perennial state contenders, I believe Mr. Salary is deserving of the label Mr. Football. (but then again, the entire town is headed to FW so I doubt they will generate the online "clicks" to win this popularity contest)

  • Scott - 9 years ago

Hey Stevens and Castner Fans - This is not American Idol. Your votes mean nothing. Jones is going to win Mr. Football and I believe Castner will be a close second. Stevens didn't even get out of Sectional play and his numbers are very average - he has absolutley no shot! Take a break and let the politics begin!

  • Mike - 9 years ago

I wouldn't say that Castner is a far better player than anyone else on this list. They're all terrific players. But, I would say that he had by far the best year of any QB in Indiana High School Football based on his stats and the competition he plays every week.

  • Crv - 9 years ago

Caster is by far the better Player, on the field and In the classroom. To have the success he had on the field, and keeping above a 4.0 is tough work. However, this is all politics as usually. The better player has a tougher time winning.

  • John - 9 years ago

I totally agree with Mike's comments below. BD's Kyle Castner would be just as happy for another player as he would be for himself for receiving the Mr. Football award. I have never met a more humble and gracious young man. He highly represents Ben Davis High School and Wayne Township both on the football field and more importantly in the classroom.

  • John - 9 years ago

I totally agree with Mike's comments below. BD's Kyle Castner would be just as happy for another player as he would himself for receiving the Mr. Football award. I have never met a more humble young man. He is a first class kid who highly represents Ben Davis High School and Wayne Township on the football field and more importantly in the classroom.

  • Obadiah - 9 years ago

    I have a small pp

  • Bil - 9 years ago

Why are there 6 classes for the state football playoffs and only one Mr. Football? And as far as the boasting on players from certain schools because of win/loss records, wait until Cathedral is bumped up to class 6A in the IHSAA's foolishness. Carmel won't be undefeated then.

  • Mike - 9 years ago

Though I do agree with Scott's comments below - I assure you that BD's Kyle Castner could care less about being named Mr. Football. This is a total team guy who never toots his own horn. He is a leader on and off the field and only worries about BD football and his teammates. He admires and respects all the candidates listed for Mr. Football and would be very happy for any of them. This is just one hell of class kid that everyone should root for.

  • PJ - 9 years ago

Can't deny the stats folks ... Castner should be voted Mr. FOOTBALL! Go Giants....

  • Scott - 9 years ago

Here is the bottom line to all the nonsense I read above. This group are very talented football players. However, the Mr. Football winner must only be judged by what he has done on the field this season. Who cares about how many college offers one candidate has? The college coaches miss all the time and this award has nothing to do with college offers. With that said : This vote should only be a two way race at this point in the season. BD's Kyle Castner has led his team to the State title game for the first time in 12 seasons. His numbers speak for themselves. 3,271 yards passing ( Number 1 in the State ) and 32 touchdowns against the very best competition in the Midwest. BD's regular season schedule consisted of : Cathedral, Avon, Carmel, Warren Central, Center Grove, Pike and Lawrence Central - Road to Lucas included wins over Pike, Avon, Warren and Center Grove. All teams they have played before and all rated in the top 10 in the State. Are you kidding me? How much tougher can a schedule get? With all that said however, I still believe Markell Jones should be the favorite based on his record breaking state rushing records. Though his 4A competition is much weaker compared to Castner's - You can't deny his dominance on the field. Jones is my number 1 pick to win the award, followed very closely by Castner. My 3rd thru 6th in order would look like this : 3. Williams, 4. James 5. Salary 6. Stevens.
Let's be very honest here about Tommy Stevens - Stevens is a very good football player and should be successful in 2 or 3 years at Penn State, but to have him as a Mr. Football candidate is being solely based on all his college attention. Decatur Central not only plays a very weak schedule, but over 30 QB's in the State had better passing numbers than Stevens. When Decatur Central finally played a good team (Cathedral) in the Sectional Championship - the results were very predictable. I might add that Cathedral lost to every MIC team they played this season. I know this vote is always political, but the level of competition should always be a big factor in this vote and numbers certainly don't lie.

  • Kyla - 9 years ago

Todd - Kyle is definitely NOT the coaches kid. Probably shouldn't put out false information.

  • Michael - 9 years ago

Not taking away from any other player but Charles Salary has lead his team, who won 2 games the last two years combined, to the final four in 5A basically singled handily. In the regional game the Slicers didn't have a single passing yard yet demolished their opponent. This is the same Slicer team that lost their teammate Jake West on the practice field a year ago. Mr. Salary may not be the most popular choice so he may not be victorious but I believe he deserves some sort of recognition for his leadership on and off the field.

  • Carmel - 9 years ago

I can't believe people are actually going to comment on this ratting on other school's players. You're literally taking away this accomplishment from these boys by saying they don't deserve it. Seriously? Are you that desperate for your person to win that you're going to gossip about the other players academics to get votes? That's actually pathetic. Isaac may not have the top numbers but truth be told only one person can have the best numbers. Kinda what the word best means. Acing those numbers means you also have to have a good offensive line to block and receivers to catch. Isaac didnt get on the poll because we're "carmel", whatever the heck that means. Isaac got on here because in the end he led his team to an undefeated season and the state championship. Does that mean we'll win? Absolutely not. We've already beaten Ben Davis this season and it's really hard to beat a good football team like that twice in the same year. Also, to the person talking about their guy being smart, a kid with isaac's grades and intelligence could run circles around most of your top A+ students because the acedemics at carmel are proven to be much more rigorous than any of these other schools.

  • Todd - 9 years ago

To the people who continue to speak on The win/loss records of the teams that is completely irrelevant. This is an individual award, and if BD or Carmel win state that doesn't mean that the kid representing that school is any more or less deserving of winning (once again) an individual award. Kyle and BD are playing great, Kyle is not half the football player Tommy is and that's apparent by Kyle not having one single D1 offer and Tommy having, what 18 now? Kyle is putting up crazy numbers, it's good to be in a passing offense AND THE COACHES KID. Take Tommy off DC and they might not go .500 take Kyle away from BD and BDD is still playing in the state championship game.

  • Andrew - 9 years ago

Sorry. We are just students trying to get one of our players(Isaac) the respect he deserves.

  • Tim - 9 years ago

Oh and Drew Carmel played WC and beat them good try tho.

  • Nick - 9 years ago

Yall are sure talking a lot of smack. Check out the tallies I don't care what you think about equity and fairness. Kyle is winning the votes and there's a reason for that. I'll let his football speak for itself a week from tomorrow, but I will say this - you better be watching if you're gonna talk trash. Cause in the end of the day he's the one still on the field.

  • Drew Summeier - 9 years ago

Oh, and Tim, WC played St. Xavier, a way better team tham Trinity Lutheran. Blew them out when they played them.

  • unknown - 9 years ago

Issac James is a good athlete. Castner is a good athlete with better mumbers. He leads the state in passing yards. If Issac James is so good, why doesnt he lead the state in rushing and recieving yards? Castner is breaking records over at BD and Issac isnt coming close. And Bd lost to carmel ,because it was terrible passing conditions and thats what their offense is based off of. Carmel does not habe a good secondary. Stori is going to tear them up and so will Evans. Chops isnt that great of a running back, he holds the ball loose and is easy to strip from. In my opinion, Castner is the best player here. Tommy second with all the things he does at Decatur. They just dont play amy body big.

  • bob - 9 years ago

Kyle an BD will win state Carmel can't hang wit us

  • Kyle - 9 years ago

Jody. That was truly unnecessary. I work for this site and just because many Carmel families are well educated and have good jobs doesn't mean you can take away from these great kids. Honestly I've seen many games and he has showed the best leadership and composure.

  • James - 9 years ago

Looks like the Decatur people paid their Internet bills just in time! This poll can't be taken seriously when you can vote over and over.

  • Jody - 9 years ago

Good point, Misty. All of the boys nominated have been nominated for a reason. Hopefully they are all successful in their college years!

  • Jody - 9 years ago

Good for him. That's easy to do when parents keep their kids medicated as I've heard they do in Carmel. ;)

  • Misty - 9 years ago

Andrew all these boys are great players. This is not a team vote it is an individual vote. You cannot win state unless you have successful players all around you. Peyton Manning is one of the best of all time but he needs a great line, great receivers. Tommy can do so many things and in my opinion he is the best candidate for Mr Football. He blocks, punts, runs the ball, throws the ball. Hell his sophomore season he threw touchdowns, ran touchdowns and caught touchdowns as a receiver. He is an all around great football player. I'm sure this is not based on votes from fans but should be votes from coaches. Any coach that has seen him play always says he is one hell of a football player not just a great quarterback.

It doesn't mention that Kyle Castner is our starting punter, either. Lead the state in passing yards with over 3,200 in the toughest conference in the Midwest. He's broken every record in BD history. Wouldn't THIS be Mr. Football?

Isaac has also led to a 13-0 season! Carrying the team with his rushing yards. None of the other Mr. Footballs have played as good of competition, and when they came into head to head match ups with Isaac he has won, Ben Davis with a 20 point win, warren with a win and the other teams not being good enough to be playing Carmel.

It doesnt mention that Tommy is our starting punter, starting safety and quarterback. Nor does it mention Tommy has also played wide receiver and tight end all successfully. Wouldnt this be Mr Football.
