Should the University of Maine System stop investing in coal mining companies?

    The coal industry is under attack. The new treaty with China to jointly reduce our carbon footprint is only one more example that is threatening the coal industry. The future of coal usage does not look good. Investing in coal may not be a good idea either.

    It is time for our educational institutions to lead by example. Fossil fuels are the energy of the 19th and 20th centuries. They are stored sunlight in fossil form. Today we can harvest sunlight directly, without having to wait a hundred million years for it to fossilize.
