Who would you want to replace Jim Nabors at the Indy 500?

The Indianapolis Children's Choir First of all, can memorize ALL the words, even in a different language (mike), and I can prove that because I'm in The Indianapolis Children's Choir. And being able to sing at a race that I usually watch at home with my family as a tradition would be AWESOME. Not just for me but for all of ICC. We sang at the 2014 Grand Prix and we had a blast.

Josh Kaufman is the perfect choice. He has an incredible voice, performs beautifully live (his lovely performance of the National Anthem at the Colts game on national tv moved people to tears) he has given much back to his Indiana fans and he's young but brings soul to his performances. In ten years he will be a loved part of the race tradition, easy choice!!

As an ICC alumnus I am biased. But the organization is professional and classy. Almost creepily so. It would start a tradition that would last as long as the race wanted. And it's something to which tens of thousands of Hoosiers have a direct link.

Straight No Chaser is an excellent choice. Another good choice would be "Another Round". This is the collegiate group at Indiana University that was originally Straight No Chaser. They changed to that name when SNC became a professional group. Why not promote one of the country's best music schools that's right here in our own state?

Josh Kaufman has a great voice and amazing in live performance, he should be selected.

Mike Rowe- he was an opera tenor. May be a conflict with his endorsement for Ford though.

The problem with picking an individual is that the person will eventually grow old, and the same situation will exist that now presents itself. That is, a lone performer will want (or need!) to retire from the honor at some point. By picking a group, the longevity of that decision is more certain. By choosing the Indianapolis Children's Choir or Straight No Chaser, the singers would be more likely to continue onl. Members of the ICC are obviously replaced as the singers outgrow the age group, and SNC has a history of replacing its members as they pursue other opportunities. Also, with a group, there would be more flexibility to sing the song with different arrangements from year-to-year than there would be with an individuals who is known for singing in a particular style, a particular key, or a particular voice.

Who are the 'highest levels of the Hulman-George family'? ??????? You got some 'splainin' to do, Lucy.
How many 'levels' are there? What constitutes a level? What makes one level higher than another? Most of all, how are these levels demonstrated in other family groups? Must one be a Hulman-George to have levels? Or British?

Only Kaufman, ICC, and SNC should be considered as the replacement. The other choices are just wrong, and enough people have already pointed out why. Now, SNC might not be an appropriate choice due to their name as we all know that no one drinks alcohol at this event.

i would love to see Straight No Chaser with the ICC. What an honor it would be for all and the top two would come out on top!

I would just like to see Purdue's band play it like they did when he was sick recently. That's what Louisville's(?) band does at the Kentucky Derby. I just feel that nothing will ever come close to Jim Nabors doing it, so why can't we all 250,000 get together and sing along with the Purdue band?

Straight No Chaser does an excellent rendition.

David Lee Roth. Song followed immediately by 'Everybody Wants Some'

I've read that the trip to the Indy 500 has taken a toll on Jim Nabors so why can't he sing the song from his home in Hawaii and have it broadcasted at the track live.

    Josh!!!

Straight No Chaser sings the song but only at their shows in Indiana. Here is a link (there are more if you search on YouTube):

No Mellencamp because he sucks. No to Janet Jackson unless she sings it naked. No to Sandi Patty because she screeches when she sings. No to Axl because he'd hear Jim Nabor's voice in his head. No to the kiddy choir because half the little buggers would forget the words. No to Chris Botti...just no. So, that leaves Josh Kauffman, SNC, David Lee Roth, and Baby Face. So, lets eliminate David Lee Roth because his voice is no where close to Nabors, and lets eliminate Baby Face because he'd want to "soul it up", which leaves SNC and Josh. While SNC is pretty darn good, as a group they come and go so you'd never get the same group and it would piss off ND and PU singers. So, after much thought....Josh. It'll be his only gig and he'll be appreciative of the paycheck.

NO JOHN MELLENCAMP PLEASE! HE CAN'T SING AND HE IS A DOPEY. HAVE HIM SING BACK HOME IN INDIANA WOULD CAUSE ME TO STOP FOLLOWING THE 500.

ICC would be a perfect choice. Listen to how well just a few of their kids performed it at IMS a few years ago: http://youtu.be/SFRuyNbvB1c
They are the best ambassadors for our city, and will always represent Indiana in a classy way.

  • Kyle Prell - 9 years ago

    Get Mike Rowe

  • JMC - 9 years ago

Please, please don't have Sandy Patti sing it. Then we would have to listen to her and Florence Henderson and that makes out for one miserable racing experience. Can't handle the high pitch singing.

@Lynn Sites - Drew Powell is the actor/singer you're thinking of. He grew up in Lebanon, Indiana, actually, and his parents still live there.

Straight No Chaser is my #1 choice. They still DO holiday music of course, (check out "Text Me Merry Christmas" sung with Kristen Bell), but most of their current stuff is modern pop and rock.

The argument for the Indianapolis Children's Choir is really strong. The group would be forever youthful. What a great experience for all the kids! How many grownups can ever say they sang for 150,000 people?

  • Linda Mahoney - 9 years ago

I disagree with Stephen Terrell. Straight No Chaser would ABSOLUTELY NAIL "Back Home Again" they have done it before, and could do it again. HANDS DOWN Straight No Chaser should win this job! Just my polite thoughts!

  • Lynn Sites - 9 years ago

I think you should consider the fellow from Noblesville thats on Gotham Drew ( cant remember his last name). he looks like Hoss Cartwright and he graduated from DePauw.

  • Stephen Terrell - 9 years ago

You need someone you can sing along with for Back Home Again. Josh Kaufman and Sandi Patty would fit the bill better than anyone else on the list. Botti, Straight No Chaser and the Indianapolis Children's Choir would be better suited for National Anthem. Mellancamp and Kenny "Babyface" Edmunds would likely sing the song with "rock" or "soul" intonation that would be difficult for the crowd to follow.
