Should all cars driven by teens be required to have a sticker on it?

If you sticker teens, you must also ticket elderly, terminally ill, those on prescription drugs (anyone on opiates or narcotics, these require to be renewed every 30 days) and repeat offenders to include anyone who has 2 or more DUI's.

I think this question should be reworded. Although I agree some teens drive irresponsibly, as do every other new driver. Instead of just directing the issue on teens, we should be focused also on ALL new drivers. For example just the other day I saw a man in his mid 40's waiting to take his drivers test. He could be just as irrisponsible if not more than a teenager. I think this question should have been worded, "Should all new drivers be required to have a sticker?" Instead of directly pointing the finger at teenagers. I'm a teen, and never have I had the urge nor have I had the idea of driving with another person when I was not able to. So sorry for your loss.

from a police officer standpoint you still cant utilize the sticker to conduct traffic stops. Just like a seat belt, to give someone a citation for not wearing a seatbelt you still need probable cause for a separate moving violation before you can conduct a traffic stop, then the citation is given for the seat belt. You can't pull some on over because of a decal because you can't articulate whether its a teen or not. Its a shame people use being pulled over as an excuse to complain about someone trying to do a good thing. It would help if you knew ur laws before you complain about something you don't know what ur talking about.

Im sick by some of these comments. I hope to god none of you lose a child in an accident and then have people tear you apart for trying to find a way so that other teens dont lose their lives. If you don't agree simply vote no. If you need to say how dumb it is then back it up with a productive better idea. I pray for even the negative people that they never have to lose a loved one so young and tragically. I voted yes and encourage others to.

yes i think all new drivers should

I do believe respecting our rights as citizens is important. Teenagers our minors, we still need to protect and guide them in making decisions. Driving is a privilege and bad decisions can change many lives in a second. I think any chance adults get to remind teenagers of this is important.

  • jlynn - 9 years ago

all first time drivers should be stickered whether a teenager or not... just beacuse you are over your teens doesn't mean that you are a better driver than a teenager...for all we know they could have the same level of driving skill...

  • Neveah - 9 years ago

PRGMR, that's because people have read the article that WABI posted about the decals being ONLY for Intermediate Teen drivers in their 9 month probationary period. But good point on pointing out how the poll is worded because some NO's may be from people thinking these decals are for ALL teens. This is only for 16 and 17 year old newly licensed teens.

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MANY PEOPLE THINK THE QUESTION IS STICKER FOR TEENAGERS WITH PERMITS, WHEN THE QUESTION IS (ALL) TEENAGE DRIVERS!!!!!

  • Kris Headley - 9 years ago

Please ask yourselves....a simple sticker.....if that saves even one life....that one life could be your son or daughter, your grandson or granddaughter, your niece or nephew or other family member or friend....isn't that simple sticker worth a person's life?

I think it is Wonderful idea, especially if you have young drivers and What Corey and Christina Darveau are doing in honor of Taylor ,is a Truly Amazing thing ,they want Taylor's tradegy not to ever happen to anyone else! You people that critize do not know what it is to loose someone you love, especially a child so unless you know all the facts, you will never understand! Our nephew Corey and wife Christina are the Most Amazing People I know and they have been through enough tradiges to last a lifetime. Sorry if I spelled. A few words wrong.

  • Billie - 9 years ago

This should be a national law! It serves to identify inexperienced drivers and could save lives!! Joe King when it's your child that dies as a result of inexperienced driver...maybe someone can tell you what a dumbass you are..DUMBass!!!!

  • Margaret Birch - 9 years ago

I think yes. Some time kids doe things on dears .I had a friend who drive fast on a snow road. She was hurt. She did just on a dear. She has kids now She will not let know. This is for the safety of all.

  • Lily - 9 years ago

We always want to keep our children safe. Having this sticker on the car makes it easier for all concern, police officers, parents, other teens to identity newly-licensed drivers! As a mother, I want nothing but for my son and daughter to come home at the end of the day!

  • cindy - 9 years ago

A Sticker for a person driving with a permit sounds like a good idea.

  • Anna Underwood - 9 years ago

Teens are easily distracted. If they have extra incentive not to ride with peers, and an easily identifiable tag while they are learning, it wouldn't be so different from the driver's ed cars with a student driver sign. People will know that essentially yes, these are student drivers and will be careful around them. Safety shouldn't be shameful. I am happy to tag my kids as new drivers, not for the officers, but that price is worth it, but for other drivers on the road. It takes two to have an accident, wouldn't it be nice to warn people for the safety of your teens that they are new drivers?

  • Carl - 9 years ago

Kelly this Is not so a police officer can stop the vehicle this is so when the police stop the vehicle for another violation it will bring their attention to the fact that an intermediate driver might be behind the wheel.... And if you look like your 16 be glad not sad but I am afraid your drivers license will give you away if your not.... It is the most violated law for novice drivers...... And this is a state issue not a community issue.....

  • kelly - 9 years ago

i feel the whole thing is selfish. What happens when a teen borrows their parents car? then they have a sticker and the parent gets pulled over whenever they drive their own car because of this dumb law. I understand it is tragic but it shouldn't be focused on weather she was old enough. Not every new driver is unsafe and not every experienced driver is safe. We should be focused on safe driving education not regulating our every move. This is how the government can get too involved. Now if we involved a mandatory safe driving section of the course and showed the effects i would be more for it. Other than that it is just money and publicity hungry when there are worse things going on in this town.

  • Carl - 9 years ago

it is just not the Taylor foundation who is proposing this the maine driver and traffic safety education Association is firmly behind this proposal as well as many legislators civic leaders police organizations at every level in the state. This proposal will not hurt anyone and help everyone and will save an unknown number of injuries and deaths to our young people over the years to head. If one takes the time to do their research on this matter in it's entirety It would be hard to find a reasonable prudent person that would be opposed to this proposal.

  • Christian - 9 years ago

I think this might assist other drivers to be aware of a teen driver. It would be no different than when you see a Driver's Education vehicle with students in it; I tend to be more careful as to not cause undo stress when I am driving around it. I wouldn't make this a mandate but maybe tie it into auto insurance and a possible discount. I empathize with the family that is pushing this; I don't know what I would do if I lost one of my children. Please be sensitive in our responses here.

  • cathy - 9 years ago

If this saves one life a life of a child then It was worth all the work this family put into it and it also is something their daughter would be so proud of.. If it could save your daughter/son why not a life can not ever be replaced, if you don't vote yes andGod forbid something like this happens to your child you will always be saying what if.. what if I was wrong...what if..

  • mike - 9 years ago

Can someone explain how a sticker on a car will make things safer?
Wouldn't this possibly put teen drivers in jeopardy as well. I mean, people could just stalk a local mall for cars with teen driver stickers.

I would like to know reasoning behind how this will make things safer.

  • Carolyn Giosia - 9 years ago

Its a very smart idea!!! Even if it saves one life how thankful we would be. Its also very simple, we sticker our car for inspection, we sticker our car for registration, lets sticker our cars for our young drivers, their way more important.

  • mack - 9 years ago

I understand where this is coming from, and know the story as to why. But I do not think that this is a great idea. My kids (one just got thier license, and the other will take Driver's Ed in 2015) will not have thier own car. Why would I want to have this sticker on a shared car? I do not think that this will make that much of a difference. We need to increase enforcement of existing laws, and parents need to take responsibility.

  • Carol - 9 years ago

you are missin the point, it is to save a life! So a grown up can say (you need to make a better choice) I know at least 4 teens who have died and the driver had a conditional license. It isn't to punish anyone! It is to save a life!

  • Carl - 9 years ago

there is a big difference between a 30 year old and a 16 year old getting their license. Brain development is really what it is all about and the lack of experience combined. The idea is aimed specificly at reducing a significant risk factor for our most vulnerable drivers and passengers out there. Right now it is the most violated traffic law for this age group. I would rather have my son or daughter get their license suspended than plan a funersl and sit an empty plate every year at the Christmas table ..... This is just a tool to help law enforcement, parents, and teens to keep them safe.

  • Deb - 9 years ago

Joe King: Maybe we can offer you the first Dumb a** sticker. Clearly you're unaware that the family trying to pass this law lost their 15 year old daughter last year when she was a passenger in the vehicle of an intermediate driver. They were not drinking or using drugs, But the drivers who were racing their cars made a terrible mistake and cost an innocent child their life. Please be careful with hurtful words. The internet allows calvlier and brave words from people who cowardly hide behind its veil of annoninity. You won't be - but you should be embarrassed for your statement.

  • Jeanne - 9 years ago

I like the idea of having stickers for new drivers but not all new drivers are teenagers. I really hate to have it just teens. Having been around kids in high schools, I know they feel "picked on." I didn't get my license until I was over 30 yrs old. Therefore, I feel if you put it on all new drivers it would be best. I like the idea that someone with more than one OUI be identified with a sticker.

  • Tiffanie - 9 years ago

I think it's such a positive reinforcement, and a guide to help intermediate drivers. This sticker can save lives, lives a teens "word" will not. A sticker itself has already saved too many to count. Before people become selfish with what they "think" they understand, they need to become aware of the trauma and grief that a mother is trying to save you from feeling, as she feels everyday. Before you say "my daughter will never have a sticker" think to yourself "what if I didn't have my daughter". There lies your answer. #taylortime. #taylorstrong.

  • Taylor - 9 years ago

Nobody has the right to be leaving ignorant comments until they've experienced the tragedy of losing a child due to the issue that Taylor's Law is trying to prevent. An intermediate license only lasts 9 months in the state of Maine. After that, they are free to drive with whomever they please. I think that placing a sticker on your car identifying yourself as a NEW DRIVER, not even necessarily a teen, is a small price to pay considering it could save a life. You'd think differently if it had happened to your own child.

  • Angela - 9 years ago

We placed this decal on my teenage son's car when he first received his intermediate license and it was a great way for him to follow the law. When other kids asked him for rides, it was easier for him to say, "I have an intermediate license and a decal on my car that identifies me as such, so I will be unable to give you a ride." It took the pressure off saying no to friends. I am thankful for this intermediate license plus the decal, as a group of kids in a car with an inexperienced driver significantly increases the risk of inattention, dangerous driving and car crashes. Thank you for keeping my son, his friends and everyone on the roads safe during my son's intermediate license time.

  • Carl - 9 years ago

Graduated Licensing Laws have been around since the mid 90's. Our state has a GDL and the the most violated law in Maine for teen drivers is the passenger restriction. If the parents and grandparents understood the substantially inflated risk their young loved one faces by adding passengers in a vehicle while a novice driver they would never make the comments I see here. Three or more teens in a novice drivers vehicle increases the risk that they are more than 400% more likely to be In a fatal crash and just one passenger increases the risk by 125%! If you want to comment please do your research first and be an educated person making a comment about the subject. This law is right on and will save teen lives before they are snuffed out. It is solid and well researched and documented to work.

  • jess - 9 years ago

I think its a great Idea, and most of these ignorant comment ts must come from people who dont have new drivers (yet) , and dont understand the importance of not just keeping My teen safe from jumping in a car with a new driver( statistics show , that they are more likely to be in an accident with friends in the car)! ALSO protects YOUR new driver from pressures from friends to drive thier friends when its a LAW that they can't! Many teens ( new drivers)wave the idea because " no bodey will know" well!! If they had a sticker on the car and HAD friends in thier car, people might stop them and SAVE A LIFE! SO before anymore Ingnorant people comment, please be aware of why someone put this idea into motion! SAVE A LIFE AND VOTE YES! I PROUDLY WOULD MAKE MY TEEN DRIVE WITH A PINK STICKER!

  • Karen Smith - 9 years ago

I Know people are going to have thier differences but there is no need to attack a family that just wants to protect our young youth. This also can protect us as drivers to be aware, and pay more attention , and be more understanding to them. I don't believe that a safety sticker is going to cause an alert with the Officials. I just hope all of you that have a problem with this don't ever have to endure what touched our town.

  • Sarah - 9 years ago

No it should not be required to put a sticker on a teen's car. Do you really want to point out to predators that hey this is a kid and they probably don't have an adult with them. When my daughter's are old enough to drive I refuse to put a sticker on their cars.

  • Jen - 9 years ago

YES!!! Unfortunately, people are not accepting of "change" all to often. However, when its YOUR child or family member that has been ripped from your arms at the hands of a teenage driver who believes they are immortal you will then think twice about the innocence of putting a sticker on a vehicle for 9 months to ensure not only their safety but the safety of all others traveling on our roads. This sticker will only condemn those intermediate drivers who are trying to "sneak" and get from point A to point B! Remember, you are only "guilty" if you are doing something you're not suppose to be doing.

  • Erica - 9 years ago

Yes. It's about knowing who is a new driver, not because they are a teenager. Because knowing gives rightful cause to check and make sure that who they are transporting is legal to be in their car. Due to many lost lives and we are not the first state to do this. Get over yourselves.

  • Doug - 9 years ago

I don't need my granddaughter stopped just because she's a teenager. Put a sticker on repeat traffic offenders instead.

  • Joe King - 9 years ago

A sticker on vehicles driven by convicted DUI drivers. Or how about a felon sticker? Even better a sticker to identify the dumb a** that came up with the idea.

  • Dennis - 9 years ago

I fail to see how a sticker is going to make anyone safer. It serves to condemn teens who are perfectly safe drivers. This will just be another step of government being involved in personal lives. A better idea is a bumper sticker with the question "How am I driving? Call 111-1234." (Parents phone number) We need to promote individual responsibility, not government oversight.
