Should the U.S. and Cuba normalize diplomatic relations?

Let's normalize them if for no other reason to see who the Cuban government will blame for its' failings when all of the world is trading with it. I could never understand how a country that was trading with 99% of all of the nations on Earth could blame its' lousy economy on the fact that one country had an economic embargo on it.

It will not be long until nature takes its course and the Castro regime will pass from this earth, and when it does who else, other than the country that welcomed to our shores hundreds of thousands of Cuban patriots will be there for them. The best long term strategy is for a geo-political partnership with the US and her neighbor to the south. And the sooner the better.

Americans should not become blinded by the short term consequences of an opening to Cuba, as “Yes” the entrenched power base will prosper. But on the day when the Castro’s fall from power, do we want the US to be on the outside looking in? Or do we want to have normalized relations with Cuba a reality? Or do we want to push the Cubans into the open arms of our Geo-political opponents, as we once did? Or do we want free trade and travel and commerce and a people to people exchange that has been denied for some many years.

The Cuban and the American people have a special bond and that bond is about to grow as it experiences the influence of the American culture, free from the tyranny of so many years of subjugation to Communism and the revolution.

The president’s opponents would like to halt this progress for political purposes, but Americans and Cuban- Americans should let their beliefs be known, that the future of our two countries does not lie in embargo.

Who benefits from this normalization? La puebla Cubana? Nope. Any benefit will accrue to the Cuban ruling class. Los hermanos Castro? Yes. THe Castro regime will get hard currency resulting from any business transactions. Economic benefits just as Venezula's and Russia's petro-dollar support falters as old prices drop. The USA? No real benefit unless you are a fan of Cuban cigars. Nope. The benefit for this event goes to Barack Obama who is desperately searching for a legacy for his failed presidency. At best, the deal is a loser.

After such a long history of failures it’s time the US normalized relations with Cuba. It represents a win/win situation and perhaps quickens the day Fidel and Raul will be gone and the people of Cuba can be free.
