If we are trying to endear ourselves as artist to the people of Maine, and tell the people visiting our state what we are about...please explain to me how these submissions achieve this. What exactly was the goal of the team that chose the 5 semi-finalists? I am very disappointed in their vision if there was one. I think whatever the message is, it is so esoterical that it is lost. No one will get it.

Why nothing of a marine nature? Why nothing of a beach scene? I guess it is much easier, requiring less artistic skill to just do geometric design. Even depictions of various hot air balloons...different one for each tank, would have been more interesting.

I am appalled at the five entries you have chosen! They do not reflect Maine's heritage on the waterfront or anywhere else for that matter. Two wonderful artists in my town spent days designing their entries. Although their themes were completely different, they both reflected what Maine is really about. The entries you have selected are boring, and ugly. I agree with Kerry Hadley. What an awful waste of funds!

Absolutely hideous! And I am a lover of most art.

All of these designs are inappropriate for the "working waterfront" image that Portland typifies. I am sorry to NOT see images more fitting the character of the town.
