Do you think food stamps should be reduced for people who don't get utility assistance?

Whether you are elderly, have a disability, or are working minimum wage jobs to make ends meet, sometimes you still need help. There are some people who abuse the system, but for most who ask for help it is necessary for survival. Sometimes SSDI, SSI, or retirement funds don't cover all the costs of living. This is especially true if you have health problems and/or a family to support. Society is quick to judge, but we don't know a person's story. If fuel assistance is not needed, that is great and the government should like that. It is funds that can be used to help someone else. However, just because you don't need heating assistance, doesn't give the government the right to take away food stamps. People need to eat in the winter just like they do in the summer!

“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”

    ― Benjamin Franklin

I would think the government would be glad they have one less person needing fuel. They could help someone else instead of cutting food stamps. It's not like they can buy the oil with them!

Not all disabilities are visible, and if a person is working Walmart or McDonald's they probably need food stamps to be able to feed their family. Our "system" doesn't appear to be set up to give a little help. It seems you either get help and do nothing or work what or where you can and starve because the job doesn't pay enough to live on.

People don't realize how many elderly can't afford food, after paying their bills.

Food stamps are supposed to be a help. If people are trying to stay above water and can pay some of their bills then kudos to them. There are people who need food stamps and cannot get them. It seems that the system wants people to not try.......

I think they should be increased if they do not get any assistance, for heavens sakes, that means they are struggling harder to buy food to put on their tables and pay for their heating cost and electric bills!

In cases where utilities are included in the rent a person does not need assistance but if they are not getting any assistance then their food stamps are cut. It appears that the legislators didn't make provision for that when they passed the law.
