I found the results of your poll interesting. One would expect no response from non-Austen fans, but I'm a bit surprised by the large percentage of across-the-library Austen fans. I wonder how many were introduced to her works via the movies. Also, it would be helpful in reviewing the results to know the number of responders in your reporting group, particularly vis'a'vis the number recipients of the opportunity to participate.

I thoroughly enjoy 19th century writing. I am also a big fan of Elizabeth Gaskell and many of Dickens' works, though he is somewhat dark for me at times, and the Bronte sisters, particularly Jane Eyre.

I am drawn to their masterful use of language to evoke plot, character and emotion. The shortened sentences and vocabulary of the 20th century make modern writings easier and quicker to read, but do not seem to provide the same depth of involvement that Regency writings do.

In attending jaff gatherings, I have often noted that a number of avid readers of variations are not as fond of the original novels, finding the language difficult and stilted. Instead, it was the movies that drew them into their love of all things Jane.

I agree, Shirley. Austen writes about the small things in life that combine with all other small things to create the whole world.
