Filmspotting turns 10 on March 6. When did you start listening? BEFORE...

I have been listening since 2006 sometime... I recall Sam being the co-host and getting hooked pretty quickly.. My fave moment on the show was Matty talking about my E-mail/ comments in the review of Hanna on ep #343 where I mentioned it having a very 70s feel... the years have been a blur and while other podcasts have come and gone from my feed.. I think Filmspotting is the the one podcast that has stuck around the longest...

Like some of the other commenters, I had to comb through the archive to figure out just when I really made Filmspotting appointment listening, and it was the review of The Act of Killing (between #455 and #456). Since then, I have decided to go back and start over at numero uno. I just finished #219 (The Dark Knight), so only 300 more and I'll be all caught up! :)

  • My first episode was way back in 2007, #168, where you discussed the fifth Harry Potter film. I got into podcasts through Harry Potter, and I was looking for a film podcast to listen to. Filmspotting was the top result, and I started with an episode whose subject matter I'd be familiar with. I was hooked immediately, and I've listened to every episode since.

Will we ever hear The Ballgame again? Will I ever play the Dane?
Same answer to both, I fear.

  • Julio Olivera - 9 years ago

    I forgot two things:
    1) My first episode also introduced me to Scott Tobias
    2) I'm from Austin, TX!

  • Julio Olivera - 9 years ago

Started with episode #472 - Top Ten of 2013 (part one). So not only did I get to meet Josh and Adam, but also got introduced to Michael Phillips, all at once! It was so much fun, I subscribed right away. And you can thank your pal Jeff Goldsmith for that - I finally decided to check out this "Filmspotting" thing he mentioned before each of his interviews.

I'm slowly working my way through the archives (just listened to the FS Blaxpoitation special) Can't believe you guys didn't get to review Only God Forgives (though at least now I know Josh hated it, thanks to a recent episode). Also bummed Adam didn't get to weigh in on Man of Steel. Listen, guys, I just need you to watch and review EVERY movie, ok?

Keep up the good work and thanks for the insight!

The first episode I ever listened to was Cinecast 100 - Mission Impossible III. I was listening to a lot of different film and pop culture podcasts at the time, and what I remember making Cinecast/Filmspotting stand out, was that you guys were the only show to review Mission Impossible III on its own merits, and not bring Tom Cruise's then-very-recent couch jumping into the conversation. Keep up the good work!

I started listening just before your 500th episode; "#498: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes / Top 5 Actors of the Future"

I see a lot of people highlighting your excellent conversational review style, which peels away the facades and gets to exactly what matters most. Obviously I appreciate your conversations, but what initially sold me on your podcast was something else entirely. Your whole production is mixed and edited marvelously; each of your discussions are appropriately and professionally framed into a coherent structure, separated by tasteful ad readings, related audio clips, and always interesting music choices. The sum is classical and serious while never over stepping the line into pretentious. Much like your conversations, your show dances on the line between fanaticism and academia, exactly where the dissections of film should be.

And I know we aren't supposed to call attention to the written segments, but I always love the shamelessly unfunny jokes and their deadpan delivery. You always seem to dog on your own massacre theater performances, but I can't think of two actors in Hollywood who have made me laugh so hard at such stilted dialogue. You probably won't get any nominations, but you're both on my ballot.

Thanks to everyone involved in your production, and to all of the users on your terrific forum who have given me more rationalization than necessary to spend my free time watching, reviewing and discussing movies.

  • I shared my introduction to Cinecast/Filmspotting a couple of years ago in my "Critic Origin Story" response for a CriticWire Survey, but will post it here as well:

Growing up, I had strong interests in film and writing (mostly fiction and screenplays) but hadn't done much to combine them. Then in 2005, two things happened that brought them together. First, I started listening to Cinecast, which I randomly discovered after my Dad told me about this new thing called "podcasts." [Note: the "Batman Begins" episode was the first I downloaded via iTunes.] Second, Dan Burns, the faculty sponsor for my campus film society, suggested that we collaborate on reviews for the school newspaper. Somewhere between Adam and Sam dissecting "Hustle & Flow" and Dan's mentoring (which included a satirical take on "The Dukes of Hazzard" movie as a Faulkneresque masterpiece), my interest in writing film criticism solidified.

I had a hard time figuring this out, because after Matty left I went back and listened to his earliest episodes with Adam. I distinctly remember the few episodes leading up to and through Synechdoche, NY at the time of their release. Kaufmann's film was so moving that a listener voice mail about Synechdoche even brought me to tears.

It's quite possible that I lost my FS virginity with Mr. Mementoinceptioninterstellar himself! I went with Dark Knight.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the algorithm that brought us together. Somehow it saw my endless searches for a film discussion site and thought it would be a good idea if we met. A good idea indeed! Jim Pallini Bethpage, NY

I'm such a newbie that my choice isn't even an option. I chose Interstellar because it was reviewed on the show about a month before I started listening, but my real first episode was #518, part 1 of your top 10 films of 2014 list. I found your podcast on an AV Club article highlighting the best podcasts of the year. I'm not sure that I've ever been hooked on ANYTHING ever as quick as I was hooked on your show. Since December I've listened to way more episodes than I care to admit, as well as already discovered many films I wouldn't otherwise have. My "movies to watch" list that I've kept for five years now has almost doubled in the last three months, and now includes entire filmographies of directors I had never even heard of before. Thank you so much for making my appreciation and love for cinema even stronger than I would have thought possible, and thank you for giving a freshman college student something better to do than, you know, study. I'm not sure how much this comment will mean, coming from someone who has only been along for about 1% of the ride so far, but I look forward to being along for the rest.

  • Caroline - 9 years ago

I voted for Interstellar because I started with #457 - I was looking for someone who was talking about The World's End and found what would become one of my favorite podcasts. I've been a regular listener ever since (including catching up on the archives) and will forever be jealous of those who received a nickname.

As always, looking forward to this week's episode!

  • Chris Moody - 9 years ago

Sorry... for posting my previous comment twice. And for not doing my research. Grave of The Fireflies was Episode #138. so I just missed The Prestige cut-off point.

    Highlights I've thought of...
    - Sam taking the female lead from Adam in a brilliant Jerry Maguire Massacre Theater
    - Matty's amazing Gladiator performance (now I WOULD like to see his Lear...)
    - I'm Still Here. Well done. gentlemen. Well done.
    - Getting personal emails from both Adam and Matty when t-shirts didn't arrive
    - Having my music recommendation (The Bookshop Band) played on the show
    - The HEIST marathon: Rififi and The Killing are two of my all-time FS Discoveries

Ashamed to say I've never explored the archive from #1 to #138. I may just do that now. I miss Sam!

  • Nigel Smith - London, UK - 9 years ago

The infamous I'm Still Here show was certainly one of the first I remember I listening to. I'm pretty sure I first heard about the Filmspotting via an 'endorsement' from Dana Stevens on the Slate Culture Gabfest. 10 more years!

  • Jonathan Anderson - 9 years ago

Also, it was eight years. Not nine. Still the better part of a decade. Look, I was an English major, and I even flunked out of that. DON'T LOOK AT ME.

    Okay, now I'm done talking.

  • Jonathan Anderson - 9 years ago

I left that long comment and then forgot to say what I voted for. The Prestige was 48 episodes prior to my discovery of the show, and The Dark Knight was 39 after. So I rounded up.

Also, I'm from Minot, ND. Another thing I always seem to forget.

  • Jonathan Anderson - 9 years ago

Luckily, I remember the exact show. Episode #180, the review was The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I was looking for the soundtrack on Microsoft Music, then called Zune, and I had never even heard of a podcast so I assumed they had something to do with the score. I downloaded the episode, disagreed wildly with Adam and Matty's mixed takes on the film...and then proceeded to listen to the show for...another three hundred and forty seven episodes give or take and became absolutely addicted to podcasts.

It's been almost NINE years, guys! I've been listening to Filmspotting every week for just short of a decade! Good LORD!

  • Nick - 9 years ago

I am a relatively new listener, starting on episode #496. Filmspotting has been great for me, a student in high school and lover of film who has no one to talk to about it. An entire class turned on me when I declared my dislike towards American Sniper and when I skipped the Walking Dead to watch The Act of Killing, my friends treated me as if I were insane. Thankfully your show has been a light in the darkness and your conversations have been eye-opening as well as entertaining. Here's to another 10 great years of Filmspotting.

  • Aaron - 9 years ago

I can't preciously remember the first episode I heard, but it was early enough that I could easily go back and listen to all the Cinecast episodes starting from the beginning. So I'm going with before Batman Begins. I remember a road trip I took listening to those first shows. I know I didn't use iTunes back then - if iTunes even supported podcasts at that point. How I found you is also somewhat hazy... but remember Podcast Alley? I recall manually downloading podcast episodes and copying them over to my early days non iPod mp3 player. I know you were amongst the first podcasts I discovered. Strangely, I've probably only watched a small fraction of the movies you guys have discussed over the years, and there's been instances where I didn't get around to something you covered till years later. Then I recalled you mentioning it - recalled the conversation being compelling in its own right minus any personal context with the movie - and went back to track down what you said. I do miss Cinecast/early days Filmspotting. I miss the pre public radio vibe of the show. Aging sucks man. The inevitability of discovering a routine of yourself, whittling away the rough edges and what not...

I just noticed the old shows seem to be broken in the episode archives. Are they disappeared from existence?

  • Robert Mick - 9 years ago

Started listening with the Sin City review all the way back at Cinecast #5. Haven't missed an episode or live show since.

  • Chris Moody - 9 years ago

I think it was #152, the review of Grave of the Fireflies in the Animation marathon. Adam was virtually in tears trying to talk about the film. 2 years later it came up on Film 4 and I watched it. I bawled like a child for 20 minutes, a reaction unlike any other film I've ever seen. Filmspotting is bloody brilliant, I've bought the t-shirts, met up with Matty Ballgame in Windsor, blogged about the show more than once and had several emails read out. Bravo.

I missed the cutoff date for Batman Begins by only a couple of months. I discovered Cinecast while searching for movie-related podcasts on iTunes to help make my hour-plus commute to Naperville easier. I can't remember what my first episode was because as soon as I started listening I went and listened to/downloaded the entire backlog and then burned them onto CD so I could play them in my car, and would download and burn each episode when they were posted.

My commute and listening to new episodes are much easier now (I have the app on my phone and take the el).

  • Alex Charner - 9 years ago

Since I started listening, I have lived in two countries, six cities, been single and married. You can track the story of my decade through my time listening to cinecast/filmspotting, like the Boston terrier from "Feast" tracks a love story through his meals. Anyway, Batman Begins.

  • Jeff Schroeck - 9 years ago

My first actual Filmspotting episode was #388-Wanderlust/Pickpocket/Comedy Ensembles, though the first FS thing I heard was SVU #3 from the previous week. This was before that show got its own feed.

  • Christopher (Lexington KY) - 9 years ago

Specifically episode #264 . . . review of First Golden Brick winner Moon. Have not missed an episode since! Keep up the EXCELLENT WORK!!!

  • Ben James - 9 years ago

Hey! Filmspotting & I share a birthday. I'm turning 23 on the 6th. Apologies for making anyone feel old.

  • Matt - 9 years ago

Proud to say I was "on-board" from episode #1! I can't remember how I stumbled on the podcast (some weird feed, probably, pre-Itunes) but got hooked from the get-go. Proud to say I was one of the first Massacre Theater winners, before you guys were giving out prizes...wait a minute...do I get a retroactive reward? Plus interest? (kidding). Thanks for the years of great listening and Adam, hope you are still watching the Emmet Otter DVD I sent years ago (weekly viewing?)
    All the best,
    Matt

Listening since 2007... but I listened to the backlog available which went into 2006... I have no idea what episode was my first. Matty Ballgame was cohost. People got nicknames still. There were always outtakes. Fun facts about hometowns of donors.

  • Joe (FilmEgg) - 9 years ago

Been listening for what seems like forever but I think it was around 2008 and to my shame I still haven't paid the dealer...

  • Zack Adams - 9 years ago

After months of having my brother tell me to check it out, I started listening in late 2011 when Adam was looking for a new co-host - #375: Hugo/Muppets/Movies About Redemption, to be exact. Quickly got hooked as I worked my way through the Adam and Matty back catalogue and am a handful of episodes away from completing the entire archive. Filmspotting is by far my favorite podcast (and I listen to far too many), the podcast I recommend to people the most, and my favorite excuse to take day trips to Chicago (went to both live shows in 2014). Keep up the good work, guys. I'll be listening every Friday.

I started listening in late February 2012. I had recently purchased an iPhone and was searching through podcasts for 'oscar predictions', stumbled upon one of your episodes (#387) and was immediately hooked. Spent that week listening to a bunch of the back catalogue, which caused me a bit of confusion as to which cohost was which! Became a regular weekly listener with the Traditionally Animated Episode (#389). It was a good year to listen to Filmspotting as it included films such as Zero Dark Thirty and The Master.

The podcast is still something I look forward to each week and enjoy sending feedback/ideas via twitter and email. I like to go back to the annual top-ten episodes and I especially enjoy episode 300. Happy 10th anniversary, I tip my hat to all those involved.

Btw., I know this is the wrong place for this, but... I just watched Predestination, and you have got to watch it. The performances, the cinematography, the plot... without having watched Primer (yet) it seems to be a sort of similar movie, just not as extreme.

  • kadajawi - 9 years ago

If I recall correctly I stumbled over your podcast after watching Solaris... the Tarkowski version. I went to the imdb board to figure out what the hell I just watched, and someone recommended listening to your discussion of it. Been hooked ever since.

  • Byron from Greensboro, NC - 9 years ago

I feel like a late bloomer having to select the most recent film, but I started listening shortly after the Dark Knight Rises show. Filmspotting has opened me up to another corner of the film industry and has kind of changed the way I watch movies. It isn't just my favorite movie podcast - it's my favorite podcast.
    Congrats on 10 years.

A long time ago in a city far, far away... I had a work trip to Chicago and, while in the car, I flipped through some radio stations. That’s when I came across this thing called Filmspotting. It was episode #152 and the review of 300. I’ve listened to every episode since. I wanted a Filmspotting nickname. And for my sins, they gave me one.

Not sure if I understand why its all Nolan movies, but I started listening to the Wrestler review.

I started listening in 2006, back when I was a wee babe at the tender age of 22. It honestly doesn't feel like that long ago. I've graduated school, gotten married, switched jobs and now I'm expecting a little one and I'm still listening in! I enjoy every show. Thank you guys!

My first episode experience was quite singular, I'd say. I found the podcast (and podcasts in general) in December of 2010, having just watched I'm Still Here. So I saw that there was a 3-month-old review of that, and I played it. The episode was a giant fight between Matty Ballgame and Adam, complete with threats of ending or leaving the show. It didn't take me long to figure out that it was a joke in the vein of the film, but it was a great first exposure. Kooky and spirited, the show hasn't let up since. Keep it up, gentlemen!

  • Sam Vargen - Martinez, CA - 9 years ago

My first Filmspotting experience was listening to Josh rip apart To Kill a Mockingbird on #395. Although I very much disagreed, I loved hearing his argument and was immediately hooked. Since then I've gone back through the catalogue and am now pretty much completely caught up. Keep 'em coming!

  • Kenny Meier - 9 years ago

My first episode was #303, Nicole Hollofcener's PLEASE GIVE. I remember thinking the show was going to be some sort of pledge drive, since I'd never hear of Hollofcener or her new film at the time. Over the next year I listened to every episode of Filmspotting and in the last 5 years have watched hundreds of movies I heard about from Adam, Sam, Matty, and Josh. Thanks again for everything, guys.

  • Thomas Dargent - Lyon, France - 9 years ago

So is this how we measure time now ? With Nolan movie release dates and their Filmspotting reviews ? Aren't you aware that the passage of time is far better measured with the Woody Allen Calendar or the Marvel Earth-Cycles ?
Anyway, I have been listening to Filmspotting for about over a year now, which places me somewhere between Interstellar and TDKR, so I guess I'm only a one-nolaner so far. I look forward to listening to you misunderstand good sci-fi or bring a reckoning to disappointing superhero movies (with atrocious accent imitations, as one would expect) for many a gritty blockbuster more.

  • Keith Moser - 9 years ago

Wow, that was kind of hard to figure out! Checked my Yahoo Sent folder and it seems my first attempt at Massacre Theatre was way back on #193 (Chicago) in Jan 2008.
