The 80's? Uh, we already had ponies in the 80's and I really don't want to go there again. I see enough (too much) 80's nostalgia elsewhere anyway.
Actually I would want to see the 1930's incorporated into pony since suit-clad gangster wasn't quite in full swing in the 20's, but I the 20's are close enough. I thought the 1930's era style shown in "Batman the Animated Series" was exceptional and find myself craving more of that Gothic/30's stuff.

I think y'all are missing the point. I'm pretty sure it's more about the "feel" of a past decade than the technology. You've got to think about what kind of stories could be told during a time when Equestria reached its fullest expansion, and ponies were discovering things and acted like absolute dicks to one another, and it *felt* like the 1920s; or when Equestria was in the midst of a worldwide war and then suffered a great economical depression as a consequence ('30s and '40s); or when teenage ponies started actively rebelling against their parents, and maybe caused some problems for later generations ('60s), and so on.
Stories depicted in any of the listed decades would have a wholly distinctive feel. Keep that in mind.

Yall need to get off your historic high-horses. We've had anachronisms since Season 1, and Equestria has arcade cabinets, which I'd consider technology more advanced than a train.
Also, people arent getting dumber IRL. If you'd stop lamenting over how kids these days aren't up to your personal standards and look at tangible documentation, you'd see that people are statistically smarter than they used to be. If nothing else, literacy is through the roof compared to the last turn of the century.
Also, we have canon sources that the 80's happened in equestria in terms of pop culture. Cheerilee has that fun 80's getup photo. The 80s is prolly winning not just from sheer fun factor but because, in canon, it still means that we can have our favorite characters in it in some form.

@Icy Shake ,"European peace from 1815-1914" ? You know, there has been a pretty big war in Europe in 1870, right?

Ponies and the 1930s or (early) 40s is kind of upsetting to think about. Honestly, I think even the 20s is a bit weird since that time was greatly shaped by World War I. The 50s and after are especially molded by the car and the invention of mass suburbia. It's a bit of a problem that they are already a mash of different periods and themes.
In any case, I'd say late Victorian or Edwardian, even as far up to early 1914, is what I'd really like to see. And why not? Say that they've had a millennium of peace before the return of Nightmare Moon, like the century of relative European peace from 1815-1914, and put the episode towards the end of that.

1920's, because Equestria isn't all that technology advanced, and the music! I love 20's music, it's so upbeat and makes you want to dance with your soul. MLP music, if anything, is often reminiscent of it.

If we set the show in the 80's, wouldn't that just be rolling the clock back to G1?
This current generation is completely devoid of any history.
1890s electricity
1900 powered ground transportation
1903 autos with gasoline
1907 powered flight

1960 the Beatles- manned space flight

Wait I'm stupid the Dark Ages were like way before that. Either way, Equestria isn't advanced enough for this poll.

I don't think the technology in Equestria is advanced enough to have any of these as a "past-centered" episode. Actually, we already got one in Hearth's Warming Eve, and that was some Dark Ages shit like 1500s or something.
I agree with Kicks_McGee. Apart from some minor discrepancies shown during musical numbers (such as the arcade during The Perfect Stallion or the movie theater in Babs Seed), their technology seems to place Equestria in the mid 1800's or early 1900's. Even the flying machines shown resemble what was dreamed up before we could actually get off the ground. The most advanced piece of technology shown outside of a song, I believe, is a flash-bulb camera. Other than that, there isn't even consistent use of electricity.
If anything, this episode would be a jump into the future.

How is it the 80's? It's most likely the 20's because of their technology and the fashion. I mean, when have you seen someone from the 80's a hat like Rarity's?
What Kicks_McGee said. I gather there is something left unsaid in this poll, some detail left out?
Kicks_McGee - 9 years ago
All of these years sound NEWER than most of Equestria. It's a land with magic castles and horse-drawn carriages, where the most advanced transportation is a steam locomotive. I mean, 1980's? For a past-centered episode? Compared to Equestria, that's the distant future! Even Manehattan is in the like 1960's at most...
