I would definitely want to see this hospital to be bigger than VGH. I would assume the cost of building a larger hospital now would be significantly less than adding on/expanding the hospital later. Since our province is envisioning that we are having more people moving to Metro Vancouver every year, hence the debate on the congestion tax, would it not be wise to build the hospital higher and bigger to accommodate for the medical demand NOW than to find ourselves in a tight spot later?

Kevin, they will keep the existing facility open until the new one is operational.

This is exciting news. I have one concern however. There is a 7 year lag in patient care if the new facility is to be opened in 2022 and the current St. Paul's closes this year. What happens to all the patients from throughout the province who currently have procedures and treatments planned? What accomadations have been made for these people. Seven years is too long if you have a serious medical problem.
