I voted for the salon owner who spent thousands of dollars to help breast cancer suvivors. When i think about what is a humanitarian, I think about someone who willifully and purposely does something to make someone's life or situation better, and that is exactly what she did. Dont look at the dollar amount because it was not about the money. She set out to make not 1 or 2 but 14 suvivors feel beautiful and speacial. She set out to celebrate there life and to have them tell their story. IT WAS all about them. So you go Tamiko!! I pray God continues to bless you to use your God giving gifts as a tool to server him and to service other people.

Mariah Smith you are such an amazing and inspirational young lady. For all that you have done to help the homeless over the years and for the many people who have been helped by you, inspired by you, and simply amazed by you, I want to say thank you sweet angel. You are a blessing!

I was driving down the road one day and saw Mariah Smith helping a homeless couple. I pulled over because it was something you rarely see this young lady with a van full of everything possible and she was helping them go through all the items with this beautiful smile on her face. It looked like they got clothes and food and I saw the man trying on shoes and then she gave them hugs and it looked like the lady was crying she was so happy to be getting all of those things that she obviously needed. What an amazing girl you are Mariah. I went home and told my wife about seeing you and she was in tears too. You have no idea how many lives you touch Mariah Smith you definitely touched ours.

I voted for the young Girl Scout who made the cards for our troops. What better way for me to cast my vote on Memorial Day by remembering the ones who serve. And keep up the wonderful work you do for our troops and military young lady! God Bless you!

I have been following all of the wonderful work of Mariah Smith founder of Blankets for the Homeless for over three years. I first learned of her amazing mission helping the homeless when she spoke at our Church. our entire congregation was so moved by her story and have been supporting her ever since. We have done three donation drives for her cause and it is so beautiful to see all the children so inspired by what she does and how they want to be just like her. Mariah was only 17 when she started what has turned into a huge organization helping hundreds of people daily. I can only imagine what it must be like to be homeless and having her pull up in her van full of lunches, blankets, clothes, shoes, and everything else she distributes almost daily and be helped by this caring and compassionate little angel. I have seen thousands of pictures on her Blankets for the Homeless Hampton Roads facebook page that shows the impact she has been making in our community. I heard her beautiful interview on KLOVE music radio with her heart so full of passion and love to help people in neeed. Keep up the good work Mariah your selfless work is beyond impressive. You are going to make and already have made a huge difference in thousands of lives. God Bless You Mariah Smith and all that you do to help the homeless. They call you "Blanket Girl" but I think they should be calling you "BLANKET ANGEL"!

I am a veteran of the U. S. Army and what the 10 year old did for our troops by sending Christmas cards is amazing! At only 10 years old she is making a HUGE difference in our community. I can tell you when I was in service and my family was not with me during the holidays I would have given anything to have received a card like that. Just for someone and a stranger to care like that is amazing. And watching her interview and hearing how the lady said her cards were much appreciated. I know they were because like I said I would have loved to have received one when I was in service. No one ever did anything like this for me or my fellow soldiers. Let alone a young 10 year old girl. I can't wait to follow her for years to come and possibly even see how I can get involved myself. We are a huge military community and we need to do more for our military. Let's all rally behind this young 10 year who is making a huge difference in our community! GOD BLESS HER AND GOD BLESS THE USA!

I saw the Blankets for the homeless Veterans Coming Home video on the PBS channel and was so impressed with Mariah Smith bringing awareness to the challenges of our Veterans who have served our country proudly only to come home and find themselves homeless. Mariah is an amazing inspiration to all of us starting her organization when she was 17 and look how far it has come and how many people she has helped. This young lady is a shining star. I went to her blanketsforthehomeless.org web page that tells her own story of being homeless at birth abandoned on Christmas Eve. She could have been bitter and angry about that but instead she turned it into something positive helping hundreds of people and inspiring thousands of people to join her. This unstoppable young lady is making a huge difference in our community and beyond.

As the daughter of a retired Vet I voted for the cards for the troops. I pray this little girl keeps this up for years to come.

I voted for the little Girl Scout who made 2,000 cards for the troops all by herself. To be 10 years old and so little to do such a big thing and have such a huge heart is truly amazing. I loved at the end she says she is going to do 4,000 this year! You go girl! I bet she does! To be so young and already doing such wonderful things for our community. I can only hope that my grandkids will look up to her for inspiration as they get her age!

I voted for Mariah Smith the young lady who has been helping the homeless for years. Mariah was 17 years old when she started her organization that has grown to help thousands of people and inspiring even more people to get involved on her mission of mercy and compassion. If anyone wants to see what this amazing young lady does you can go to her web page www.blanketsforthehomeless.org or to her facebook page Blankets for the Homeless Hampton Roads that has thousands of pictures of what she has done to help the homeless and of all of the people she has inspired to get involved. I think the most important thing Mariah has accomplished is changing the way we all view the homeless. Mariah you are beyond deserving of this award.

I voted for Mariah Smith the amazing young lady who did the Christmas stockings for the homeless one of the MANY amazing things she has done to help the homeless community in Hampton Roads over the last four years. This selfless young lady born and abandoned on Christmas eve 21 years ago took her tragic story of being homeless at birth and made it a crusade to help the homeless in our community and further as her inspiring and amazing organization continues to grow. Mariah has speaking engagements weekly at schools, churches, businesses and organizations spreading the word and encouraging thousands to help her do donations drives of blankets, clothes, back packs, toiletries, and other desperately needed items then five nights a week distributes to those items to people living on the streets. Mariah spoke at our church three times inspiring our youth and entire congregation to get involved we have done many donation drives for her. Every time she speaks it brings tears to the eyes of anyone who hears it. Her passion to help is contagious. This amazing young lady is so deserving of this award. I must say Mariah that I am so very proud of you and am proud to say that I support your organization. I think meeting you is something I will remember always and will tell my grandchildren about when they grow up. You are truly the most inspiring young lady I have ever had the honor of meeting. God Bless You Mariah Smith and thank you for all that you do. You are an angel!

I voted for the Girl Scout who made 2,000 cards for our troops. Living here in Hampton Roads and being such a big military area this is wonderful what she did for our troops. It is sad that we don't take more care of our troops now and for a 10 year old to think of them is just beyond words. She has such a big heart for such a little girl!

  • Anna - 9 years ago

I voted for the local Girl Scout who made 2,000 Christmas Cards for our wonderful military troops! What a wonderful thing to do at only 10 years of age. With us living in the biggest military area around it is important to support our troops for all they do for us. And what a big heart a 10 year old little girl has by thinking of them. And she has already said she is going to do 4,000 cards this year! Wow! What a great example for other young kids! Vote for Brianna! She is passionate about our military!

i voted for the young woman who handed out Christmas stockings for the homeless. I was so inspired by her story and she has been helping the homeless in Virginia beach for years and I would love to see her win this humanitarian award and maybe inspire other young people to try to help people in their community! The young are our future and they need to know that they can make a difference even if they are only teenagers, young adults, etc.

I Voted for Linda and "helping needy people in the community" / the food bank at Coastal Community Church because it literally saved my life when I had absolutely no income or food due to an injury. And, I will do anything I can to repay their kindness. This is an extremely excellent worth while grass roots organization that you should support, because it does such fundamental good in the community. Thanks Linda!
