Do you think merging T.L. Hanna and Westside High schools would be a good move?

I was told this was going to happen whether we as a community like it or not!

This would be a great idea bcause it wouldn't effect me but it would greatly better my chances of going to a d1 track school out of state and it would make our athletics top notch because all the talent is on one campus so only the best will play and that means more wins more success more spirit and that's what we should want at any school not matter where it is that's my personal statement

T.L. Hanna and Westside combining will cause an infinite number of problems and much controversy. How are upperclassmen supposed to invest in the underclassmen and the next generation if they are separated from them? You will have to cut teacher's jobs which will break the relationship between teachers and students. Although athletics will be way better, we are not all athletes and we have to get our priorities straight and invest in education before athletics. Also, Hanna is ranked in the top 5% of high schools in the nation and Westside is unranked. How is that fair for Hanna students when their high school rank will combine with Westside and drop? Plus, the larger class sizes affect both sides since teachers will not be able to give students individual attention if they need it. And also, when we join we might be together in a building but we will still be separate naturally.

As a student we dont have many opportunities for your voices to be heard. To be very honest this could work but it would be more negative then positive. This is not about race. Yes, i understand that we as students can benefit from this. This seems to factor out all of the small things. There are breaking up full communities. Communties that revolve around the school they are zoned for. No more Westside vs Hannah games. No competition for the other to do better. In grades, athletes, and other things that we always do. Parents will be forced to drive across town to take there child to school. Student drivers will have no choice but to drive the longest distance to school. ( For the ones that stay to far out or the ones that stay very near Westside) If money is what we need den why not save it. The busses would have to pick up more students and drive longer distances. Therefore wasting gas. Hannah and Westside students and parents say no to this change. Not because we are afraid of it because of the little things that would cause more problems. The bigger classes that are coming up i understand the difficulties. The 10-12 grades would be in more fuller classes. And somekne on these comments was totaly Right. What will happen to that student that needs that extra help. But what will we do when thoes lower class men that are coming up drop. And that upper class men rise. This will create over crowing. Can we think longer and reconsider all of our opinions? Please.

Hanna is too far for the westside students.

This is a terrible idea! A lot of families have children in different schools (elementary, middle, high) and to have to drive from one side of Anderson for one child, while the others school is a stones throw away is ridiculous. Also, many coaches and teachers could potentially lose their jobs with the merge. And as far as 9th graders doing better without upper classmen-- isn't that was the ninth grade academy was for? And until you have a fresh batch of students who have neither attended Westside or Hanna the chances of fights are greater, and segregation between the students will most certainly take place!

It needs to stay the same, some people wanna follow in there parents steps they want to go to the same school there parents did or family did. People want to follow traditions. And I went to westside I agree way to many fighs will happen about who better and what side they came from.

Saving $20 million seems like a lot of money until you break it down over 20 years! It's $1 million per year. The annual budget for school district 5 is over $100 million per year. Think about it for just a second. The savings is less than 1% per year!!!!!

I could cut $1 million per year in less than 30 seconds from the budget. Most of it at the administration level. This is a terrible idea and I think the people should let the board members know this by calling them at home. Call them, call them and call them. If not, they will run over us again.

Remember the money the administrators spend is OURS!!!! Not theirs. The children in our schools are OURS!!! Not theirs.

Betty Bagley is no longer the worst Superintendent in District 5 history.

This could be the worst idea I've ever herd in my life. Do you know what happens when Hanna and Westside kids are put together?! Nothing goes well for either of them. There will be more fights and people want even be able to focus on education due to over crowding. Students want to graduate with their people at their school. Parents don't want to drive across the state to get all their kids to school. You will throw away the history of Hanna and Westside. The system has been like this for years and I don't see why there is a need to change. The board clearly needs to re-think this through.

I am a proud Hanna alumni and a Hanna baseball coach and I believe this is an awful idea. School is about education and not sports. Athletics are just extra. This would loose a plethora of jobs, cause fights, and break tradition. If I were still at Hanna and this debate was taking place I would still highly disagree with it because if I started high school at Hanna I would like to graduate from there. Also, there might also be many cause we're there are parents who have kids who both attend "Anderson High" but have to take one to Hanna and one to Westside. Please look at the votes and see what the people think because as you can see, the majority of the people strongly disagree with the idea.

dont do it, plz dont do it, another one goes in and we all go through it

There should not be a combination of T.L. Hanna and other school, don't you realize that there are more cons than pros to this argument. People at both of these schools are very different, and you definitely cannot throw away the value of T.L. Hanna, and neither of Westside, to make one school. Its not a matter of race, it's a matter of tradition, friendships, job security, and helping students get the best education by giving them one on one attention, motivation and whatever else that they may need to be successful in college and in life. We must make sure that students have the best education possible, and not just subject area education but education on life. We could not do this with the larger level classes because it would be too many kids per class, and that one kid that needs one on one attention will not get it, then they will get lost and possibly retained. This does not sound like a smart idea, lets reconsider.

  • imblack - 9 years ago

Most of the black population of Anderson agrees with this. Im black, so i agree too. I might have to ride my pet monkey all the way to School, but it's better for my edumacation

  • Carter Albertson - 9 years ago

I think that this is a terrible idea. School is about education and not sports. People go farther in life with education instead of sports. Yall should think about others such as teachers and students. There will be more fights if this happens. Also, to get better at sports there is something called practice. So to win games all you have to do is practice. People want to graduate with Hanna students not Hanna and Westside. School is practice for the future, and practice makes perfect and nobody's perfect so why bother.

This is not a good idea. Think about how this decision will affect the students. Money isn't the only factor involved in making this decision. Think about how this will affect the future of students in terms of collegiate opportunities.

Rivalry will be over, teachers are gonna be fired, fights, dumb ass idea. The only reason this gonna save 20 millions dollars is because all these teachers are gonna be fired so they don't have to pay them.

  • anon - 9 years ago

This would mess up the sports, it would make teachers lose their jobs, Hanna will lose all credit for college applications, more fights, more problems. It would be just sticking Hanna and Westside in one school, not make one school.

  • Luke Segars - 9 years ago

It's been just fine for years...why change? Too many jobs are going to be lost and to many relationships with students, teams, areas, etc. will be thrown away.

  • Billy bob - 9 years ago

I dont give a f... I want this more than anything. I think this is a very good idea, but some ppl say no because they jst scared.

  • Hanna - 9 years ago

I think that this should happen, it would help with education.

  • matt willmering - 9 years ago

worst idea i ever heard in my life.

  • Chelsea Reeves - 9 years ago

I think that we should just leave us alone because if we combine Hanna and Westside it will cause more fights than what we have ever had before.
