I'm seriously thinking most of us are going to call it "new bridge" and "old bridge".... And after this naming ceremony I am completely OK with that!!!
Harper won't have a chance next time around....we all know he's a hockey fan, so 'big deal' he spoke up...the people of Windsor should of had input on the new bridge's name, considering how many years we've had to listen to the bickering between the politicians of Canada & USA... it's has been a long time & we still have to wait 4 more years until it's completion!

As Gordie's newspaperboy in early 50's, I say GO FOR IT.
In my opinion it is a perfect name for the new bridge. Gordie Howe is CANADIAN , He is a honourable person. He is well respected by all hockey organizations He is Mr. Hockey. All players who played with him whether on his side or opponent respected him. Hockey is Canada`s game and so is Mr. Gordie Howe. Very good choice.

As a Windsorite, born and raised, now living in Ottawa, I am having real heartburn over this bridge name. Our current Prime Minister is an avid hockey fan who knows the game inside out . . . and that's where it should have stayed. . . right there in the Prime Minister's residence. Windsorites should have had more say in the naming of the bridge and had they had more say, the name "Gordie Howe" would never have issued forth from their lips - GUARANTEED!!!!

Great name, really embodies the two cities. Gordie Howe is respected in both communities. He IS a historical figure, and part of the culture of the two communities. Nobody will forget that name. The "Freedom Bridge" is plain and generic.

As Windsorites, we should have had an opportunity to vote to name the new bridge. I know everyone I spoke with would have loved to have a say and vote on the top three choices. Where is our Mayor on all of this? Is he not our voice?
The name is a poor reflection and made in complete ignorance to us as Windsor residents. We are great people and we have so much heart. I feel we have been completely neglected in this process and I can't help but be offended.
I say we rename it on our own and use it amongst our selves and in time we will have renamed it everywhere!!!

Naming the bridge after the most overrated, dirtiest hockey player in history is an absolute joke. If Howe played in todays NHL he would be permanently suspended for his dirty play. Why did Stephen Harper get to name this bridge? He probably needed Google maps to find out where Windsor is. What a joke!

I think the name is ridiculous. Why Not Probert same ideology. Canadian people are paying for this bridge and should have a say. I agree with International Freedom Bridge makes much more sense. The name Gordy Howe will make Canadians look really redneck and uneducated

As much as I have respect for Mr. Howe, I feel that a historical figure would be more appropriate than a sports figure. Perhaps even a name like "The International Freedom Bridge". And I agree with Sherry, since we (the tax payers) are paying for it, we should have had a say and a vote on this. So much for Freedom and Democracy, smells more like dictatorship to me. Absolutely, RENAME IT!!

Gordie Howe may have been Canadian at one time, but he is American now and so is his family. We pay, we should have named it after someone in Canada and who lives here. Should have been a raffle. Lots of time to name it.
