The Confederate flag should not be displayed in any official way. It should be relegated to museums, not the public plaza. However, individual citizens have the right to display that flag as part of their right to free speech.

The Confederate flag remains a symbol of division and separation and polarization. It is the symbol of the old south, the good old days of the plantation, segregation, Jim Crow and slavery. It’s inconceivable that it can remain at the state house when it represents such horrid and callous and despicable values.

To the people of South Carolina that support the values this atrocity stands for, just remember, you are known for the flag that you fly.
