I have found digital photographs to be archivally unstable long term when stored on removable digital media (CD and sticks) and the process of managing their archive, (updating software to retain compatibility) so that it is secure and maintains image quality more time consuming than with film transparencies and negatives.

I believe also that it is still an archival requirement in many briefs for archaeological work that digital and old school quality B+W negatives and colour transparencies still be compiled.
