I loved this comparison and completely agree that Whiplash was a better film all around than Birdman, which I was massively under-impressed with. My personal favorite of the nominees last year was The Imitation Game. It was an engrossing, well-written (Oscar winning) story depicting a hot social issue without getting too preachy and presented perfectly by Benedict Cumberbatch and the rest of the cast. It was the best overall movie of the year in my mind. Maybe if they did something gimmicky like film the whole thing in POV it would have been given a little more attention.

The foresight and execution of Boyhood was unheard of in the history of film and thus it was last year's greatest achievement in cinema.
