Utilities can fill in behind retirees as they always have by recruiting and training. There is no looming crisis.
Unless our industry starts offering salaries and other benefits competitive with other high tech industries we won’t have a workforce capable of managing the complex systems that we are building.
Distribution engineers of the technical level needed will be soon in short supply and, as usual, it will take a crisis to stir regulators into allowing companies to offer competitive packages that fit the new workforce.
There’s no way we can move fast enough to change our culture to attract what we need or to provided adequate training to grow our own. Utilities will end up outsourcing for the “brains” to design and manage the system. Utilities will depend upon trade schools and community colleges to provide system operators and field forces.
