Major utilities being bought up and operated by non-utility entities is a good thing. Removing the protectionism of regulation and other special treatment increases accountability to investors and customers and ultimately results in a better company.
It’s a bad thing! Utilities have a long established social compact that doesn’t fit the ordinary rules of commerce. The fact that we’ve gotten to the point of even considering buying and selling utilities as nothing more than investment instruments just shows how poor an idea deregulation was.
