This is one area where Project CARS excells above all other games, the audio is sublime! However, there is the very annoying digital clipping bug, & other related bugs that ruin the experience somewhat.
I think it was a mistake to tone the sounds down via updates, those who think they are too loud have obviously never driven a real race car. I had the pleasure to drive one in 2009, & the sound was so brutal & loud & raw that it seriously surprised me! In fact, all I could remember thinkng was "NFS Shift", as that was the closest game to what I was experiencing during my track day.

its way better than GT sound and on par with forza i would say.
but there is still a gap to like raceroom.
all that little things you hear in cockpit are all there...
thats a point where you can still improve.
and please less sound recycling in different cars

Your car sound is better than GT and Forza but the sound of opponents cars is non at same level

pCARS has better sounds then GT6 but on-par with Forza. Neither are as good as Raceroom RE or iRacing.
