My guess is that if he doesn't escape that he ends up bitten, laying the groundwork for the extended goodbye episode. With the percentage of characters that we see torn apart on a regular basis, it would be extremely odd for a character of Glenn's magnitude to go out on a gore-less fade to black after an ambiguous distance camera angle.
