I thought you were being a little harsh to begin with, but the dialogue was really lazy a lot of the time, and there were far too many extended shots of moody soul searching. Had to suspend belief over some plot lines, especially the 'makeup' connection. She was a constable, but seemed to have acquired a plethora of Forensic and Detective skills in the interim. Shame, because the cast was potentially great.

I thought the continuity people had a lot to answer for. It was disjointed and very difficult to follow - it seemed to jump from one scene to another without any obvious connection.

I think you are being overly generous in rating E04 the 'best episode of the series so far'. Perhaps given the standard of the previous three that's not so hard to achieve though.
Like you, I stuck with it, feeling it had potential, but for me it all started to fall apart in E03 and the finale was quite farcical.
Overall though, I agree with all your criticism of what should have been a fascinating tale.

    What they said!
Teeth-grinding slo-mo close ups to kill time,
    Aimless plot.
Four hours of tortured souls, going nowhere.
How, for goodness sake, did this drivel get agreed to? Surely there are many, many better options.
Time to jettison the addicted, recovered addict, psychologically damaged uncharismatic lead character. Time to eliminate all cliched lines and plots. And in this case, loose about 3 of the hours spent in moody close-ups of the lead.
Not a redeeming moment in the whole enterprise!
