'I know what I know', and more importantly, I know what I DON'T know !!
A stint in the USAF in Southeast Asia - 'Airborne NavAids' {heavily electronic - a 38-week Tech School followed by other Schools for the rest of the time . . . } - I saw just about everything -good and 'bad'- and how to improvise to get the job done. I don't know about anyone else but MY mantra was, "IF I don't do my job right - somebody doesn't get home tonight".
I've always been 'Mechanically Minded' and my College 'career' followed. I look at something and either KNOW how it works, or have to FIND OUT. I still know how to piss-off my wife of 40+ years - even though she is a Chemist & Thermodynamisist & smarter than me.
I know Electrical and Plumbing. AND household GAS systems. Minor stuff & Installations - no problem. However IF it takes special tools -I WON'T spend heavy dollars for a 'one-time-use' tool- that's when I call the 'Pros'. With one 'caviet' - I expect a 'Pro' to know MORE that I do !! I usually sit there and watch them a) to learn, and b) because I don't want some 'screw-up' hidded under a coat of paint, or behind a wall !! And I've got a BIG mouth and not afraid to tell someone to take something BACK.

The only thing I don't at least attempt to fix is major electric work, and that's because I don't want the insurance company to deny my claim saying I'm responsible if an electrical malfunction burns our house down. For that kind of work I use the pros.
