    LiberTarHeel; sorry, I don't follow directions very well, but that is what you get from someone who went to ECU.

    Would you like to hear about my tomahawk?

    Like dchamp, a G30 fits my hand perfectly with their extension. Whenever I've carried a smaller caliber, I always wish I'd carried a bigger one. I don't find much difference between a 9 and a .45 recoil. If you practiced enough with a .22 , cheap and possible if determined, to where you could hit an eye at seven yards, that would be a good gun for you. IMO.

    My submitted answer was .45 ACP ... old habits die hard. However, in reality, a more correct answer would be (in descending order of preference and depending on conditions): .45 ACP / .357 Magnum / .380 ACP. (Because the question addressed EDC, I did not digress into long gun calibers or wilderness carry.)

    I carry a 9mm for EDC but when I go into bear country it is up graded to a 10 mm(G20) with Buffalo Bore Heavy 10mm 220 Grain Hard Cast bullets (as a last resort only).

    The reason for the nine is more rounds on target. I practice 2 shots center-mass in 1.5 seconds from a dead draw and one other between the eyebrows & the upper lip (that kill shot takes a little longer) all within 7 to 12 yards.

    However if I be going to a gun fight; the pistol is on the side for backup because a long gun (TAVOR!!! with MAKO red dot for up close & personal or a SCAR heavy with ACOG for reaching out and touching) is in the hands, and hips & heads are practiced along with center mass.

    I like Glock , G19 is my favorite in 9mm but the G43 will do when my concealment ability is limited.

    Also along with my ZP Israel toothpick, I also carry when required a GRAYMAN Suenami custom engraved with the words;

    "Death before Slavery"!

    Goes well with my III% ring that says;

    When Tyranny becomes law
    Rebellion becomes duty!

    Caliber wars! How fun. Maybe next we can vote on whether the 1911 is better used as a fighting handgun or a door stop. Just kidding.
    For real, though, I also thought this was put to rest. Handguns being at best marginal according to many in the know, I fall into the camp of use what you want, but use it well. For me it is 9 mm, simply because of it's price compared to other centerfire cartridges, but I have also carried .22 caliber when that was all I had.

    I wonder why there is a debate any more. Outside of a few areas where grizzlies roam, 9mm just makes more sense than anything else. This is not the bad old days when people carried ball ammo for defense.

    Once and awhile I will carry a .38 snubby or compact 9mm depending on circumstances, but when I do… I do feel a little under gunned.

    My EDC is a Glock 30 or 21 in .45 ACP. These sidearms fit my hands comfortably and are very dependable. There is something to be said for bore diameter and bullet weight, the .45ACP is a good balance of both and that is very comforting.

    In the beginning, I carried a Ruger .357M with .38+p hollow points. It was difficult to shoot that gun well, no matter how much I practiced. Then I carried a Springfield XD compact .45 for years, again with hollowpoints. Eventually, I started having trouble completely controlling that gun, and could not ever shoot it with only one hand. So, I reluctantly gave up the .45 and got an XD in 9mm. It was a good move for me, since I can control it and shoot well with both hands or either one alone. The Hornady Critical Duty rounds I carry in it will get the job done. And, since the FMJ practice rounds cost so much less than the .45 cartridges, I can put neat patterns into targets often enough to maintain my skills. That's a win/win for me.
