Will the Flying Squirrels remain in Richmond?

The city has needed to do this for a long time and it needs to get done. Re-vitalize the downtown area, clean up the area around the diamond AND get a first class facility to use for the Squirrels and other public events. In return, they'll generate revenue which they can use to build schools and fix roads. It worked for the Richmond Braves...when they left town. It's worked for countless other minor league sports towns and It really isn't that hard a concept. If we lose yet another sports team, be prepared for teams to stay away for a long time...until we do what we need to do, and have needed to do for years. Put the stadium up. Now.

They are free to find a place for themselves anywhere in Richmond or the surrounding area. I don't want one dime of public money spent on a private facility for a private company. We simply don't get value back from about 70 home games a year. That's 295 days without income as they don't host other events. The big stadiums you hear about nationally have other events like concerts or conferences, they add additional value. Other than VCU baseball, what events are held at the diamond?

If a stadium is built, who will own it? Who will get the revenue generated from it? The Squires management want a new stadium in the city, in a prime spot, and don't seem to want to foot the bill. If you want it so darn bad, buy the property from the city and build the nest the way you want to see it.

If you don't want to foot the bill, don't expect us to and don't let the door hit your tail on your way out.

It is a real shame that Richmond continues to thumb their nose at baseball. The Squirrels are one of the top teams in 2A baseball as far as attendance. I believe if we lose the squirrels Richmond will not see baseball for a long time if not ever.
