I voted after seeing Creed but my excitement for the Michael B. Jordan comeback after Fantastic 4, Ryan Coogler directing and the fact that it just had to be better than Rocky Balboa (a movie I like) would have made it my pick. Joy comes close and I love Russell and his recent cast of regulars but I have a sneaking suspicion that the success of Lawrence and Russell's collaboration may be coming to an end, if not with Joy than with one of their future endeavors.

Even if THE HATEFUL EIGHT was on this poll, my choice would remain JOY. Russell's films have proven to be more wildly unpredictable, often taking a firm point-of-view that is in opposition with the story he presents on screen. His films come alive with an explosive energy that throws everything at the wall, hoping some part of it will stick. It's an overwhelming approach to writing and directing film, but it is also wildly entertaining and beautiful when it works. His last two films had characters striving, but mostly failing, to accomplish their American dream, ultimately realizing that there is nothing for them at the end. They are unconventionally dissatisfying yet the humanity given in the writing and the performances ultimately lift the stories above the rampant absurdity. David O. Russell may be a raving lunatic screaming into a microphone, but for me, that's far more compelling than checking off another typical Tarantino bloodbath.

  • I can't decide if the Joy preview reveals too much or too little.

I work at a cinema and from that list I will prob only watch Creed and In the heart of the sea.
I'm oddly numb to Star Wars and only looking forward to Captian Ameria - Cival War and Suicide Squad. Joy looks terrible! Fav movie this year would be straight outta Compton. Drew (Girl) - South Island NZ.

None of these I don't even want to see Star Wars.

I voted 'None of the Above' which I figured would win this poll. Next in line would have been 'Joy,' and I am sure I'll see that when it hits Redox. Creed? When it hits HBO or Netflix. Same with Good Dinosaur. In the Heart of the Sea might surprise us all. I hope so.

While I am curious to see all of the films listed with different levels of excitement, this one was surprisingly easy for me. Hands down it is CREED. There is something about the ROCKY series (excluding number V in the series) that I find totally watchable. They are formulaic. I know what is going to happen and when. But that may be where they have me at this time of year. The holidays are about family and the joys that come with being with those you love. And, hokey as it may sound, the ROCKY series has that familiar feel that makes you feel good this time of year. I love the ROCKY series and I want to see CREED. (That said, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE got my vote for best Cold War film, not ROCKY IV. C'mon, I may be nostalgic, but I know a great movie when I see one!) -- Patrick Banks, Lee's Summit, MO

My vote goes for "The Good Dinosaur" for a very simple reason: I have a 5-year-old son who loves dinosaurs, which, I realize, is a bit repetitive.

I also assume "The Hateful Eight" is not on the list because it would have been the runaway winner. So in Filmspotting parlance, this must be "The Hateful Eight Memorial Poll."

As for awards bait films (for which I'm a bit of a sucker), I'd have to vote for "The Revenant." That trailer packs a wallop. I wasn't a huge fan of "Birdman," though I liked it fair enough, but they've got me seriously intrigued to see what that one brings.

I'll add to the chorus for The Hateful Eight, and I know what your thinking "it's a limited release picture until January with it's wide release". But if the reports were true at least two cinemas a state will be getting the 70mm treatment (waiting on that list) which gives basically everyone the chance to see it. Given that seeing a true 70mm film that's by Tarantino in southern Idaho let alone anywhere is a rare opportunity, I'd gladly throw all the other options away for that true spectacle!

I was a bit shocked to see The Hateful Eight wasn't on this list; and, as is apparent from comments posted above, I'm not the only one who was shocked. I figure The Hateful Eight wasn't placed on the list because it would have stolen the show, but come on guys! An all-star cast featuring in a screenplay penned by one of the best working auteurs with an original Ennio Morricone score, an inter-freakin-mission, AND it's shot in glorious 70mm?! I think we all know what we'll be doing in December.

Maybe I've taken too many hits too the head but Creed has my vote. I'm looking forward to this fresh take on the franchise of my youth, adulthood, and mid-life crisis. It took Sly to make a major boxing movie with a black protagonist. Oh the irony. I'm sure Josh will hate the film.

  • Martin Cuevas, Crystal Lake Illinois - 8 years ago

Went with Creed for this one.

Best guess is that Josh will find it unpleasant given the universal praise it has thus far received. Wouldn't want anything coming between his adoration for Rocky 6.

  • V.V. (in New York) - 8 years ago

    Um... Hateful Eight anyone?

  • Leslie from Westfield NJ - 8 years ago

What's with this list? Did you purposely pick the worst films of the season for us to pick from!?! The movies this season to see are: The Hateful Eight, Legends and Macbeth. Everything else should go straight to VOD.

  • JoNo - 8 years ago

I had to vote None of The Above.... I would only pay cinema prices and brave the holiday crowds this festive season to watch Tom Hardy & Tom Hardy in Legend. A close second would be The Fas in Macbeth - But as I am in Durban, South Africa, neither have, or will be opening in any of my local cinemas... so I guess my vote is really for Star Wars (or The Hateful Eight! - i can't decide!)

    Thanks for a great show!!

ps. you did put 2001 in the pantheon - I just listened to '264 - Moon' where Adam and Matty both agreed it should be there - you obviously just forgot to do it!

The season is going to be crazy with "prestige" pictures vying for the Oscar noms. Going to the theater needs to be an experience one cannot get from sitting at home, watching the film on a smaller screen, even if one has a good sound system. The film I'd go to the theater to see is The Hateful Eight. Tarantino's movies are always worth watching, and seeing it on a big screen in 70 mm wound make it quite the event.
