Which do you prefer?

I cannot speak for pictures of thorns Tom but as a former pro portrait photographer of 22 years standing my clients (given the option) would generally prefer to be shot (figuratively speaking of course) against a white background; as made popular some years back by the Venture franchise for their “lifestyle” portraiture. However, if you were to ask serious portrait photographers, the likes say of 4th generation Edinburgh photographer Trevor Yerbury, most I’m very sure (given the option) would reach for a black background; the reason being that subjects stand out better against a black background and additionally carry more gravitas. For these reasons I have voted for the black background as my preference. Hope this of some value in your quest Tom?
