Christopher, a symbol is just that, a symbol. Take a look at the history of the swastika. Just like the swastika it wasn't until recently that the Confederate flag started being used as a symbol of hate by a few. There is no reason to re-write history, the only way to learn from mistakes is to recognize them as such.
If we start removing flags, statues, monuments etc... the new generation will not ask the questions and learn how far we really have come as a people, and how far we can really go improving our society.
Don't know how accurate my statement is here but I do believe that most people that are against it don't even know its history and are going along because somebody in the media said it is bad.

Despite it's popularity the Confederate flag HAS at many times been used as a hate symbol. No symbol of hate deserves a place of honor on a license plate. To allow it would require allowing other symbols of hate to be printed on plates as well. Some may argue but allowing the Confederate flag on a plate is not different than allowing Nazi symbols or the ISIS flag. and those would never lead to controversy simply because nobody would ever put those symbols on a plate. There needs to be a NEW symbol for "southern pride" one that is not nor has ever been a symbol of bigotry or hate. Everything has a time and place, and that flag's time was the civil war, and it's place was the banner of a loosing side. It doesn't belong in the 21st century because all it does is stir up people, and open old wounds. let the demons of the past die and move forward with new found pride. #Newsymbolforthesouth

Nancy, If those beliefs haven't changed and people still think they are fighting some 200 yr old war in the name of pride. Then we have not advanced as a culture or as a country. Honoring the ones lost doesn't have to mean defend their beliefs. We aren't like Germany hiding Nazi's in unmarked graves. You can have Pride in the south, without glorifying a slavery era belief system and it's symbol.

It's governor McAuliffes way of trying to win another vote he doesn't care about our ancestors it's because it's a confederate flag not being concerned with the pride we have for our ancestors it's what people think the flag meant not what it's true meaning is

I don't understand why the Sons of the confederacy should be treated any different those who fought in the 2 world wars they fought for this country just like everyone else who went to war. They fought for what they believed in. Isn't that what this country all about!
