In the mid eighties I was in my 20s and a lady pharmacist had a L E in black and yellow that she drove to work all the time. I lusted after that car so I would stop and try to buy it from her for what seemed like months.I finally wore her dowm and she gave me a price. It was $5500.00, more than I wanted to pay but by now it was a matter of pride.I had to have that car! So I took it home put it in the garage and was thrilled. The next morning I was in my driveway waxing it and who should pull up but the pharmacist and her husband. She comes storming towards me, I want my car back I made a mistake selling it and here's your money give me my car! God I felt awful but at the same time I had not tried to offer her less I had paid what she said she wanted for it I told her I was sorry but it was mine now she got her price and that's the end of it as far as I was concerned. About a week later I was driving past that pharmacy and sitting out front was her brand new yellow Corvette. So now I hoped we were both happy.I had a blast with that little car.I autocrossed it and enjoyed many an evening drive on the curvy country roads of southern Indiana with the targa top off.Great memories!

    I owned 2 914's back in the 1970's. Bought both new. #1 was a silver 1970 1.7 liter. #2 was a 1973 Alaskan metallic blue 2 liter.
I really enjoyed driving both. Top cruise speed of about 110 mph. Drove the '73 from Illinois to Georgia in record time.
But I always regret not popping for a 914 6 cylinder. That was - and remains - a remarkably nimble performer.
I took several racecourse driving lessons via my local PCA chapter - which is where I learned the true capabilities of the 914 when driven by an experienced pro driver.
I'm fully aware of the Porsche snobs who typically frown on the 914 experiment. Nonetheless I had years of fun and enjoyment.
I occasionally rent 911's and ... yes ... I acknowledge the enormous performance gap between the two.
