Like other voters, I'm having a slight problem navigating the logic of the question, because I'm rooting for other people in all of these categories, except for JJL (which is why I voted for her). But why must you make me feel bad for voting against Bryan Cranston? He's brought me so much joy over the years that it hurts to vote against him, and to see him losing this poll.

In the same episode in which you put this choice on us, you feature a clip from The Hudsucker Proxy to reminds us of how many different roles that Jennifer Jason Leigh has inhabited in which she might have garnered a nomination already. Daisy Domergue is just another in a list of Oscar-worthy performances; however well it was (or wasn't) written, under Leigh's skillful hand, Domergue becomes a character who is shackled, beaten, and bound for the gallows, and yet is clearly in control of her fate throughout.

This comes down to "who would I most want to see win." Cranston may or may not deserve the win, but I don't want to see him beat Leo. Same for Rampling and Larson. That leaves supporting. I don't quite get the Rylance thing, but JJL is easily one of my three favorites in her category; I'd enjoy seeing her win. My real pick is Rachel McAdams, who I'd like to see continuing to do amazing work in dramas.

Am I missing something here? To be fair, I haven't seen Rampling's performance in "45 Years" (something I'm looking to rectify as soon as the movie opens at my local theater this week) but since seeing Rylance's performance in "Bridge of Spies" on the film's opening weekend, that has been a performance I've never been able to shake. Maybe its because I'm an actor as well, but It's a potent cocktail of stillness, economy, and most importantly, becomes not just a single performance but a true collaboration with the other actors. Those performances, I think, wouldn't exist the way they do without Rylance's work and he wouldn't exist without them. Jennifer Jason Leigh was great, but I just don't see what everyone is so hot about. That performance flails and thrashes thrillingly, But Rylance's performance stands there, not daring you to notice it, but quietly insisting on it's effect on the film and my imagination.

You both bring so much joy and education my way since I started listening in 2012. Thanks guys. So very much.

  • If the question weren't framed around rooting interests, I might have given this to Rampling. You've invited us to bake some "x-factors" into the calculus, though, so brilliant though she may be, I'm not exactly leading the actress's cheerleading squad. Her performance was wonderful but Rampling herself no longer has my love, in light of her recent comments. I'm speaking from the heart - a Filmspotting mandate.

I sat next to Bryan Cranston at a play, once, so I feel bound by fate to him - but Jennifer Jason Leigh and Mark Rylance are the two I'd be happiest to see give an acceptance speech. She's lovely and long under-appreciated; he's a gentile superhero of the western theater. Out of loyalty to my profession, then, a Rylance gets my vote. Leigh? The strongest possible honorable mention!

  • This was a tough call. Jennifer Jason Leigh was a powerhouse in THE HATEFUL EIGHT. Although the writing has much to do with this, I thought Leigh’s presence and charisma was unique, insofar as her physicality and dedication to the role demands the audience’s awe, pity, and hate within almost every scene. That said, Charlotte Rampling’s performance in 45 YEARS definitely got smoke in my eyes.

Rampling, not unlike Leigh, forces the audience through the emotional gauntlet, but she does so through, as Josh has said, invisible acting (a perfect description). Rampling’s performance in the last two minutes will stay with me for the foreseeable future.

Jennifer Jason Leigh by far. Though I will love the sound of Academy Award Winner Alicia Vikander, Leigh would be my vote in that line up.

Absolutely has to go to Charlotte Rampling. Her performance is absolutely phenomenal in 45 Years (which snuck it's way into my top 10 of the year). If it wasn't for Brie Larson in Room, I'd say this Oscar was hers to take. I can't say I'm too familiar with her previous film work, but who can forget her as Dr. Evelyn Vogel from the amazing TV series Dexter?!

Mark Rylance was pretty good in Bridge of Spies, even though I was far from a fan of the film.

Jennifer Jason Leigh, while I loved her in Weeds and Revenge, as well as her voice work in Anomalisa; I thought she was way over the top in The Hateful Eight, even by Tarantino standards.

And Trumbo? People actually saw that film?

So I had to choose Rampling for this poll.

I have to vote for Jennifer Jason Leigh. I just saw The Hateful Eight last night. She was fantastic in that movie. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the other three movies, yet.

Well, Rampling *would* have ran away with this poll before recent events.
