Should prison inmates be allowed to have smartphones if it'll help keep the peace?

I'm a Sergeant in a state prison in FL. I have found so many cell phones on inmates and even uncovered a cell phone operation at my prison that I can't even get back to work until the investigation is complete for my own safety. I even busted an inmate live streaming on FB and when I picked up the phone I was on the video. No matter where an inmate hides any contraband I can find it, no matter what. Remember this, if an inmate gets desperate he will hide the phone up his rectum.

    Why let them sit
Around during nothing they used to work and growing there own food. Stop giving them things that we outside have to work for. If we want to eat we have to work to get it. Give them phones that they can used only to make calls on. Make them learn what work is about. 8f they want to fight put them in the army for 20 years ( withuot pay ). Let them come back home half man or woman. They think that they are hard. Let them see just what it like to have an army trying to kill them. Send them to war. Let them see what it like to have others trying to kill them. They get 5 yrs and get out. Then 6 months laterly they are back behind bars.. Give them 10 to 20 yrs in the army

Enough about how the prisoners are living in run down prisons and have it so rough!!! They are treated better than our Veterans and elderly in nursing homes, plus they have more rights. Prison should be a place where people don't want to go, instead of making it nice to where they don't mind going! We have our priorities so mixed up!! Let's treat people who make the choice to break the law and go to prison like they are at a resort and not worry how our Veterans are homeless and receive horrible medical care or our elderly family members in nursing home that cost family member their homes and everything they own to get mis-treated and terrible medical care. Prison is supposed to be a place to go where you go for punishment for the breaking laws for murder, crimes against women and children....etc. But instead they go where they, more or less have more control over the entire system and riot, sue the prison or state because they don't get what they want or don't like how the living conditions are. Instead of tax payers and the government paying for them to be in prison, make them pay or their families pay for their time in prison. Maybe if the families or the lawbreakers were made to pay, there wouldn't be so many in prison. And they should not have access to computers, any cell phone or phone, and no cable television. Yes, the prison and guards should be responsible for their safety but should also have better ways to control the prisoners. Allowing the prisoners to have more luxuries only makes it harder for guards to have control and be able to monitor their activities ae easy. If you do the crime than pay for your time! Less rights, less fights.
I'd like my house to be larger, to be remodeled, and have free cable, etc.... and be able to have the government or someone else pay for it. I'd like for our Veterans to have homes, better benefits and medical care and for the elderly in nursing homes to be treated with the care and respect they deserve and not have to lose everything they and their family members worked for.
The government needs to get their priorities in order and take care of the ones who fought for our freedom, for people that worked for everything they owned, and for our children's education, instead of putting prison conditions and prisoners as more of a priority!

As a Corrections staff member, I have a better understanding of this. These "guards" should be arrested. Conveying contraband into correctional facility is a lethal mistake. If your willing to bring in one thing why not something else. Drugs, weapons, or phones are power in there. Once the inmate has power over a "guard", that inmate has a pathway to anything. Phones allow the incarcerated to communicate with their people to cause more harm, unless monitored. They are not in prison because they are nice people. If you think phones are not a bad thing in prison, you have never been exposed to these people. You have NO idea what they are capable of.

This is a maximum security prison.... They lost their rights when that cell shut! If you want to talk to your family so bad straighten your a$$ up and don't get caught up in the criminal lifestyle! These idiots put themselves behind bars and expect sympathy and rights? Hell no!!

Naturally, an inmate is going to lie when convenient. I am sure some smart phones get inside by dirty officers. But, an inmate is not going to tell you that their own family/loved ones, who visit them, are bringing the phones to them. Believe a convicted law breaker, if you want.
During the institutional search there were supposedly some thirty phones discovered. But, there were some not discovered. The inmates ARE STILL communicating with news media, are they not?

So prison is supposed to be a punishment of a crime. If you don't want to be there don't commit the crime. Yes there are a few in jail that are innocent but remember 99% say they are innocent. If correctional officers are caught selling stuff to prisoners they go to jail

Having a cellphone is a way for contraband to enter the facility. If they want to talk to family phones are available. Security comes frist in the prison system for inmates an workers. They should be using their time in educational programs.

My son has been in and out of prison. But no matter who it is you do the crime you do the time. The prison system is political and it is corrupted. They do not try to reform these people. Reform is a video for them to watch not hands on training no help coming back into society which is also corrupted by politics and media. The working class citizens pay taxes out there behinds for all the food, clothes, ac, heat, cable tv(and some of these things we struggle for in the outside world) some of us don't have the luxury of all of these things at all. No they should not have phones or cable tv just to name a couple things. That money should be put toward the things needed and reform for them. You wanna give them something to stop riots? Give them a conjugal visit let them relieve the stress by having a loved one come once a week. That wouldn't cost the public anything period. As long as your politicians are corrupt so shall every thing they are involved with shall be. Rich get richer and poor people stay poor. This is a deep subject.and it will probably never be fixed

There is many people that is locked up that are innocent of the crime they were convicted of.... allowing cell phones is a way to communicate and be with their love loves during a stressful environment..... regardless I oppose to not having an open door to communicate with love ones out here in the free world.... it helps them coop with the hostel environment..... this will cause less violence within the prison..... it is already bad enough that they are away from their families and only support system they have....

they shiuldnt be funded by the state,, they shoulkd have the option to buy them off commissary though...but thatll never happen because their (the prisons) phones in there make some private company way too much money..its a scam

Where's the "HELL NO" option?! 1) I'm sure it would be another cost hidden in what taxpayers pay if it were ever allowed for this to become a regulated item to inmates. 2) The last time I checked, if you are incarcerated, you were found guilty of a crime - by judge or jury- so, why the need for another added "luxury benefit" when you should be doing your sentence with minimal pleasurities. That's the thing about breaking the law - you pay the price and that price shouldn't allow you luxuries that the outside world has access to, this isn't a vacation after all.
