The Legislature is debating: What is a contract employee?

Our businesses NEED independent contractors and temps to grow and expand their business. The temps gain valuable experience in the industry, and are often offered a full time job at the end of their stint. This is a win-win-win for everyone involved; the employer, employee/contractor and the state/local government. It's a no-brainier to support easing restrictions on who is an independent contractor and providing more flexibility for the employer.

Independent contractors also fit nicely in our states history and Yankee values of self reliance that our state was built on.

This is not so simple as your poll choices (not having the current and proposed legislation available for review), and yet it is VERY simple. The difference should be easily determined up front with either a 1099 or a W-2. If this is so the state can charge employers more for workers comp, etc., or so less-than-scrupulous contractors can attempt claims, not good. As a self-employed person, I would welcome getting more benefits, but that's clearly not how it works for us. There's no way I want to get into the rats nest of having employees, so I use subcontractors when needed. The amount of time or duration should not matter; I was a subcontractor once full-time for a year. A contractor or vendor is a self-sufficient entity hired with a 1099 and I can't imagine what is not clear about the simple up-front choice.
