Same tab is much better. If people want to open it in a new tab they can simply middle click on the link, so with "same tab" you have both options, with "new tab" you are stuck with a new tab whether you like it or not.

Personaly, I do not care. When I read news, I would open article in same tab, but sometimes I want to read more articles I open them in background with single click.
